Lately, when I leave the car and lock the doors, the emergency lights begin to flash, as if someone were trying to break into the car, and cannot be turned off unless the doors are left unlocked.

The Chrysler dealer did the diagnostic check and there were no discrepancies. The only thing they noted was that the siren doesn't work. They suggested I replace the siren (Part: $400), but they would not say that this would correct the problem.

Any suggestions?

 

The part is not $400, last time I heard it was about $160. The original was less than $100, but they changed it and now it chirps when the doors are locked and unlocked.

 

Maybe not, but that's what they were going to charge me. I decided not to buy one, hoping I could get some help here. I don't really trust the dealerships anymore to give fair pricing.

You can do this modification.
Or you can replace the siren with the new version which chirps when using the fob for locking/unlocking of the doors etc. It is plug and play.
The new siren costs about $160.

 

I would do the new chirper if I could be assured that that is the problem. I'm hesitant to shell out the money if that's not the problem.

 

My '32 did the very thing you described for a while and then it went back to behaving properly...I always assumed it might have been related to the (expensive) central locking system vacuum assembly that has notorious problems. I also suspected it was a voltage related issue because, coincidentally, it ceased after I replaced the battery. I know that's not a particularly helpful response, but it was my experience.

 

Well, the car has a relatively new battery for about two months with this problem only showing up Monday. I went to the local MB dealer and bought a MB chirper for $167 and I'm going to put it in and see if that works. Here's hoping for the best......

 

Not that you may not have already thought about it, but does it do the same thing with both key-fobs? And, if you lock the doors/alarm from inside the car using the lock/unlock button, does it still do the exact same thing? Try a few lock/unlocks from inside the vehicle after taking the battery off for 5 minutes, and then putting it back on again.

 

Do the SRT/6's have the notorious PSE pump? I guess so - same car - Chrysler wouldnt just change that bit of complex garbage.
As for the water issues that the R170 SLK32/230's PSE experience - maybe not - you dont read about them much over here. Which is interesting because one of the claims over on the MB boards is that the water in the PSE unit is generated from the pump itself and subsequent condensation, and not because rain water runs down the yellow pneumatic tubes and into an upright PSE unit (early days).
If condensation was the case - SRT6 owners dont seem to experience the same issue - so maybe afterall it was the rain issue and the inverting of the PSE unit solved the problem.

 

Well, I replaced the nonworking siren with the MB chirper (it was slightly different, but no real problems). It solved the problem....and has added a chirp when I lock the doors. And I saved $250.

 

Good for you, I wish everyone would take the plunge on these small problems, they would save a lot of $'s. Many of the fixes are within the realm of the average owner to do but they lack the courage to try. With the help of the forum many trips to the dealer could be avoided/ Cudos
