Default Best Mod for a Stock SRT-6

I know most of the performance mods I have seen are pretty pricey . If you had to pick one performance mod for a stock srt-6 which would it be. I know engine mods all work together (getting the air in, good ignition, good exhaust etc. etc.) But just curious what most of you guys do first and most "bang" for the buck.
Really kind of quick stock but know there is a lot more potential in this little 6.
Thanks

I started with the eurocharged 65mm pulley and tune when it was on sale. Haven't installed it yet but have read all good and nice people to deal with. Next I will probably head over to needswings site for a better cai.

My first recommendation (hands down) would be to buy / install a Needswings DCAI . . . Next a 65mm pulley . . . Then a Eurocharged tune . . .

Don't "cheap out" on the DCAI. Needswings system includes everything you need. It's a lot more than just air tubes!

I don't have an SRT but from what I've read here on the forum, a single NeedsWings CAI cuts the NA Crossfire's 1/4 mile times by nearly 1/2 sec. I don't know how much on an SRT, but I'm guessing at least that much and maybe more. I think most people recommend the dual intake for the SRTs.

Which of the DCAI from Needswings is the most popular to purchase. So I can start saving up

If you prefer a stock look, an sl55 intake system is the way to go. Same performance as needswings system and cheaper.

This is a tough one IMO. I did NW intake first. 64.7 mm Code3 pulley second. I expected more than I got. The mods helped but it was a dyno tune that made the difference. Put a tune high on the list. I'm in the camp where you need a tune along with any other engine mod.

I agree with this. I went with a 65mm pulley and tune first. It was like a new car. Of couse since I didn't do the CAI first, I can't know what that would've been like if a CAI had been done first. Definitely get a tune whatever you do.

I am sure there are more than a few write ups on this. Some probably more helpful than mine. But here is a link to a post I made with some pics of the SL55 intake on one of my SLK32s (which is essentially identical to the SRT-6).
Does anyone have a link to a detailed DIY sl55 intake upgrade? - MBWorld.org Forums

If you are all about performance and you want the Best set-up, buy one of Rob's (needswings) well-made intake set-ups ...but, if you like the stock look, the SL55 intake is the best way to go in my opinion.

Cheers,
Chris.

I agree with velocioabstract, there is no one single thing that works but a tune with whatever else you can afford is a start. Just a little info, when you see the advertised gains for each mod, if you do several or all of them you don't get the sum of the advertised gains but somewhat less. If that were true, we'd all have 500 HP. so as V.. stated he got less than expected, probably true for most of us.

The SL55 intake still uses a restrictive wye. Get the NW DCAI or the single. I've run both and prefer the dual for performance and sound. Next should be the pulley and tune together. Nothing wakes these motors up quite like a tune though.

If the wye is so restrictive, then why is it good enough for over 500HP on the SL55?
Save your money on one like mine and you'll have enough left over for the pulley upgrade and maybe even the tune to boot.

Why does a V8 with a 2.3 liter supercharger make more horsepower than a V6 with a 1.6 litre supercharger? That's a pretty stupid question. It's still not a smooth flow into the throttle body regardless of the power, Mike.

Below are the numbers seen on dyno runs. The SL55 setup still had the rad restriction intact and is running through the restrictive OEM box filters. "Wyes" make no difference. Dare I say my setup may provide better flow not having to deal with the restrictive 90 deg inlet bend of the NW filters. If I'm even loosing a few HP over the NW, looking at a savings of over $500 makes that a no brainer in my book.

Needswings
average before = 297.31 hp 283.69 tq
average after = 323.13 hp 304.58 ft /lbs of tq
average gain = of 25.82 hp and 20.89 tq for a bone stock car.

+25.82 hp over stock

SL55 OEM setup
Stock: 292 +/- 1
SL55: 317 +/- 1

+25 hp over stock

he...he...he...

I'll have a 2c go....
The following are from my latest engine model and assume a 12AFR is possible...by the sounds of it maybe not above 350rwhp (ie: if you're stacking)
These are rwhp numbers....and assume 20% tranny losses - so divide by 0.8 to get bhp.

stock.........................296
65pulley....................325 = +29
SCooler -10C AIT.......334 = + 9 (colder charge)
DCAI.........................341 = + 7
178crank...................360 = +19
Remove DCAI............352 = - 8

Now I'm using NW's 15"WG loss numbers for my intake gains with a 1psi at stock WOT across the throttle plate....and she's sucking in 600cfm stock.
I've been running and tuning this model for a couple of years now....maybe it needs an EC...;>)...sorry cant "calculate" that one - but sounds like a shop tune is the way to go.
For the 350rwhp - your stacked, pushing >20psi and got lots of other mods you're wanting, but you're also low 12's.

350's a nice number because it = 320kW bhp...your cousin, the SLK32's series numbers (minus the zero)....

so
65mm pulley (or 62)
Cold air - (don't right off the Killer chiller + maybe 2L add on tank to increase thermal mass) and a
DCAI
+ Tune and you're done....
enjoy it for the next 10 years....apart from the wavetrac and paddle shifters with TCU tune....;>)
and keep your eyes pealed for a S4 Kleemann SLK55 for sale with ~600bhp - but my next fast car by then will most probably be electric...

As I paid less than $500 for my DCAI that is thermal coated, I can't see a savings incentive. You linked a 7-year old thread to back up your statements...so that doesn't mean much. The fact is that the wye or "Y" pipe leading into the TB causes turbulence by design, whether it came off a stock 6 or a 55K motor. The NW elbow has no restrictions leading into the TB.

Since you are one of the very few lucky enough to find a used NW DCAI, I would assume that the retail $800 kit was out of your price range too?!! That 7 yr old thread still applies today to a 14 yr old engine that hasn't seen a mfg upgrade/design change in all that time. I could also link to a very recent thread where it's shown that a "T" produces the same effect as the precious "Y". Maybe the "turbulence by design" was intended by the engineers. Would have been much easier to use a design like the NW but they didn't. I wonder "Y"?
In any case I'll just stick with the buzillions of francs spent on the R&D efforts from MB "In Pursuit Of Excellence"!
Even @ $500 I'm saving over $200 so the "incentive" is always gonna be there!
