Looking into getting a local SRT-6. Questions
Hey guys. I recently sold my ProCharged 2002 Corvette Z06. Just was too much car for me, and after researching it they have quite a bit of problems down the road. Anyways I am a Mopar guy. I have owned 4 Neon SRT-4's in the past and have always LOVED the Crossfires. Unfortunate they were not offered in a manual for the SRT-6, but that is fine.
I saw this one local for sale. Literally only 20 miles or so away.
2005 Crossfire SRT6
I need to give the guy a call tomorrow and ask him more about it. Looks like the drivers side floorboard looks like crap, could just be the picture. Rear of the car kind of looks nasty. And I noticed its listed as "good" condition. Price seem good?
Also what to look out for with these cars down the road? I checked the sticky threads but the "review" is mixed with modifications and such. I need to know what issues the SRT-6 has in particular. And if parts are hard to come by since its a limited production car. What maintenance should the owner have done by now? He supposedly has another SRT-6 too.
Thank you for all and any help
Edit: Just talked to him. He has only owned it for 3 months. I guess he owns a lot of cars and is trying to simplify his life. Sounded like an older gentleman. He said he replaced the intercooler pump last month, has newer tires and drives great.

Its a rock solid car for a blown sports car. It doesnt have a single a issue that if it happens will cost a ton of money. The repairs are high because the only shops that will tend to touch it are 3rd party MB shops who charge rates just a few bucks below what MB charges. You can pretty much do all the repairs yourself if any issues were to arise.
If you read the forum stickies you covered all the basic's. You just need to make sure you can fit in it, it is a small car. A corvette looks massive parked next to it. Oh mine has 145k and I DD it, it wont break down its a MB engine, out of the german's I feel they make the most reliable hi-po motors. Most guys only drive theirs on the weekend's I only know of 1 other guy that is over 100k and he's likely at 180k now. Do your maintenance yourself and enjoy.
Minor mods can turn it into a reliable low 12 second car to if you need more speed. Alot of people dont know what an srt-6 is until they lose to one.

I see. How about the transmissions? Are these 5 speed autos good? If I were to get one I wouldn't mod it much. I usually do all my work anyhow.
Do they have timing belts or chains? What is the interval on those? Even that one listed has 30k miles. It is still 10 years old...

The 5 speed auto is a good transmission.
These engines are single OHC per bank, chain driven. No stated interval on replacement.
Many of these 3.2 engines in C class MB's have gone 300,000 miles and more.

Wow impressive. Any known seals or sensors that prematurely go out? Window regulators or any electrical demons they have? Rear end pretty stout too?
Guy just go out of the hospital, so it was kind of tough talking to him. He seemed to be on a lot of pain meds. I forgot to mention he said the rear quarter panel had been re-painted due to a minor accident. Title is still clean. I need to get the VIN and run a carfax on it.

That car was discussed here back in January . . . review this thread . . .

You know you'll need to have that quarter panel refinished again . . . so figure about $1000.00. Also it seems the owner has been reluctant to give out the VIN #. Be sure to get the VIN and run a CarFax report on the car before you make any deal. Overall, from what I can see, I think $12,000 is still a fair price for that car.

Also curious:

I also read about the factory supercharger unit, they are strong too? I hear they are near impossible to find if they go out , but there is a company that rebuilds them and its like $1800...Ouch.
I think I have seen one post on failed supercharger in the last 10 years. The SRT6 engines are built considerable stronger than the n/a engines to handle the extra power and heat. The intercooler pump is a known weakness and it looks like the owner took care of it. These are basically 2004 SLK 320s under the body, and M-B makes a pretty reliable car. While electronics can fail, there has not been much talk of it on the forum. I have only had a shift linkage cable pop off, eliminating 1-2 gears, but it was reconnected and adjusted for $140 and now shifts better than ever. Bought the n/a new in 2005 and the SRT6 in 2008 (8500 miles; now 24k) and other than fall oil changes prior to winter storage and tires and a battery each, no other maintenance. A careful test drive with your ears open will reveal a lot. Any 10 year old hi-po car that has been abused will clunk or make unusual noises. If it has been driven hard but with care, it should be fine. It's tough not to make a WOT run at least once while driving, but unless you are doing this constantly it should be fine. And running high speed -- the car is built to cruise over 120 mph and I have [allegedly] touched 150+.
Thanks.
More I learn about it, the more I fall in love with it!
Talked to a guy selling his in Oklahoma. He said he has never changed the coolant on it. (Car is an 05 with 33k.)What is the coolant interval? He said its a special Mercedes coolant that is supposed to last a long time. But being a 10 year old car has me worried a tad

The maintenance logbook calls for coolant change at 5 years or 100k miles. I'll probably be doing mine this spring, as well as replacing the brake fluid. Why the latter? No good reason but my Audis call for replacement every two years regardless of mileage.
Yeah that has me worried a bit.... He said it was super clean when he checked it though. But man, the original coolant on a year old car...I would hate to see the coolant passages/water pump and thermostat. Could be fine though.
CarFax checked out great for the Oklahoma one. ABS and TCM were replaced early on at like 10k miles
I am also looking at this one:
http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/de...0820/overview/
Carfax shows 2 owners, but original owner only had it for 5k miles
Car is at a dealership, but it comes with a 12 month bumper to bumper warranty on it. Not sure if that matters since I am 400 miles away from them...

All I have to add is that is a good price (any bad carfax/damage aside). I paid 2k more for same mileage.

Nice find. Why will it need to be refinished again?

The window regulators are stout no issues there. Rear end is stout, some guys have over 100's of 1/4 mile passes on theres and have put LSD's in them.
Supercharger is fine, Ive never heard or read about one failing. No electrical demons to report on mine other then air pump relay frying itself which caused my air pump to stay one burning it out. I was lucky and able to find prolly the last srt6 air pump on ebay but still paid like $250 for it, new they are almost 800+ I believe.
If you'll look through the previous discussion on this car you'll find this post . . .
I apologize. I didn't see that post. Thanks Red Dog.
I am SUPER EXCITED! I decided which one I am going to get. The Graphite one in OKC. Original owner, 32k miles. Title in hand and clean. He says the car is perfect all around. Always garaged, never seen bad weather. What a gem! Was going to go out this weekend to pick it up. But there is a snow storm on the way. Don't want to mess with any bad weather on my 6 hour drive back. Luckily he is going to hold on to it for me. This is going to be a long week I will tell you that.
