Exclamation Suspicious water pump.

Hi Guys,

Today I was getting ready to change the coolant in my 05 SRT-6 and noticed a shimmy movement (2-3 mm) in the belt where it makes contact with the water pump pulley. I checked all of the bolts on that pulley and they were tight. I grabbed the entire pulley and found movement when I applied pressure at different angles. My suspicion is that the water pump is on its way out. Would you guys concur? Currently I do not see any coolant leaking. The belt is in great shape, coolant levels are normal. Ideas? Further ways to test?

Due to the location of the water pump, it does not look like a hard job to replace but with only 80K on the clock, I'm wondering if that failure was to be expected that soon?

Does anyone know where to get the correct part (Not from the dealer) at a decent price? I'm on a budget here.

Thanks for your time.

Yes, your water pump is on its way out from your description.

Mine went about 15k miles ago and the part was like $240 or something if I remember correctly ! It's a pretty straight foward part to install ! Takes about 1-2 hours to do

I'm not absolutely positive about this but be careful about what bolt comes out (and goes back in) each of the mounting points for the water pump. I thought I read somewhere they are different lengths. If they are not, it is a good practice anyway, to keep track of which bolt/screw came from which hole. Gook luck!

They are different lengths and the NA pump is cheaper by far than the SRT pump, get the correct part.

An easy way to keep track of the bolts is to place each one into the matching hole in the new pump as you remove them, then when the old pump is out transfer them back. Install the new pump using same method.

Thanks for the helpful info guys. I appreciate it. Ill look up those part numbers and see what's out there. As far as brands go and I ALREADY LEARNED THIS LESSON with the CPS, what are acceptable brands to work with. Please let me know which ones were NOT a good choice as well. Thank you ALL again. This forum is fueled by AWESOME folks!

If you are thinking you might be installing a belt wrap kit down the road, you will want to make sure that the pump you are getting has the "ear" (area outlined in red in attached pic) in its casting. This pump (for the srt6, slk32 and c32) can be found both with and without this "ear". Both pumps work fine in a stock set-up, but both Needswings' and my Belt wrap kit rely on this ear for updating the pulley configuration.

Cheers,
Chris

Right! I was carefully looking at that while choosing the new pump. I was interested in going with a PSK from NW as I know there are other stock pulleys that are getting tired. Thanks
