A quick question for the experts. Would using 75w-90 in the diff be harmful? I want to change mine and a friend has 2 qts of 75w-90 GL5 that he will give me but I don't want to foul anything up. The diff is one place I have no experience with yet on these cars, I don't know how touchy they are. Thanks.

 

The 75W 90 is what I used. It was a Mobile1 product that, is full synthetic. I'm not familiar with the acronym GL5. All the specifics are covered in the technical section,, here on the forum. Look thur the "stickys" at the beginning of each section.

 

I used 75W90 Mobile 1 in my last two Crossfires. It takes a bit less than two quarts.

 

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't screwing anything up. As a side note, I picked up a set of Allen bits including 14 mm and 17 mm at Harbor Freight for $13.99, much cheaper than fleabay and Amazon.

 

API stands for American Petroleum Institute and GL-5 is a API quality standard.
Mobil 1 is a GL-5 oil and is the quality required in the Crossfire differential.
I just have to get around to take it off the shelf and put it in. That and change the power steering oil, Pentosin CHF 11S.

 

🙂 Just a suggestion, take the fill plug out first before draining it, it would be a real pain in the keister if you drained it first and then couldn't get the filler plug out.

 

George give me the great idea of a turkey baster. It works great. I made a small modification, adding a small piece of hose pushed up on it , that allows me to get to the very bottom of the brake an steering reservoirs. Remember... lots of shop rags, when you pull it out there is a drip,drip,drip.
That hose also works well when adding diff fluid. Its kind of awkward ,when you try it with just the bottle,(almost impossible) adding the hose makes it easier. Make sure its pushed on there good, an get comfortable before you start. (Save a lot of cussing) Try this tip , then say thanks to the forum, knowledge is power. At the least saves skinnent knuckles an the wife saying "what's all that cussing about!".

 

Changed the diff oil, easy peasy with the extended filler tube that is part of the jug of oil. It also helped that I have a modified hand built exhaust and no resonator.
