I keep telling everyone that if they use a top tier gasoline that the problem will clean itself. After you use it for several tank fulls you can use an old rag and just wipe off all of the black and the chrome pipes will stay that way. Anyone else with the same experience? Surely someone else has had the same happen to them... If you use a top tier gasoline - all the time - check your pipes. If no one else has the same experience I will just consider myself lucky and shut-up.

I usually take 5 minutes with a good chrome cleaner on them every time I wash the car!

You know what works good? Brasso... yeah the brass / metal cleaner you can find in almost any grocery store...

Here are my Pipes. Never used anything except a damp cloth after it's weekly bath. I give the credit to Top Tier gasoline.

Here is a great little article about gasoline, brands, additives and engine deposits.

It's all true and a great read.

So I still wasn't satisfied after cleaning it with Brasso, because I searched the forums and saw... Andrew's clean exhaust...

Anyways, I broke out the Brasso again and this time a Dremel tool with the polishing attachment and cleaned and polished it using the Brasso as the lubricant/polish/cleaner. It took out even more black gunk... (I actually don't think mine has been cleaned in 3 years and I'm the first one to ever clean it).

The pictures from my pocket camera still didn't do it justice. So I had to break out the SLR and retake the exhaust pictures.... here we go...

I went just the opposite way and used this:

Mask the outer rim of the tips and spray the interior portion. No more problems!

Yeah, that's black heat rated paint.

I did the same thing. I actually prefer to have just the polished lip and a flat black center. I've always though that "vanity" exhaust tips with much smaller round opening that you can see inside look bad. No all you notice is the tip and not the actual opening... Much cleaner look in my opinion. And less to maintain...

FYI, if you have an SRT6, the insides of those tips are painted black by the factory... I wouldn't try to clean them down to bare metal.

Well, if they are supposed to have black tips, then I've seen two examples otherwise. Mine has no evidence of ever being coated black and neither did the "new" SRT Roadster I looked at last week. Both were quite obviously bare metal...

I'll put that in the same category as the backwards windows switches, backwards mirror switches, Alarm Speakers that chirp or don't chirp, and convertible top latches with and without release buttons. You never know whatcha gonna get...

I just got mine a week or so ago and it appears as I have black paint on the inside of my exhaust.
