Protecting the Roadster's Convertible Top
Protecting the Roadster's Convertible Top
I wanted to share with those members on the forum, my experience with putting the 303 finish on the roof of my ’05 roadster. To start with, the roof was essentially virgin. I don’t think that it was put up or down more than a handful of times since new. So, it was clean and only needed to be rolled with a lint roller (as suggested elsewhere in this forum). Despite the roof being clean, the roller picked up a fair amount of debris.(see picture)
I took everyone’s advice and masked off the car and covered it with plastic drop sheets from the local hardware store. The 303 Fabric Guard was difficult to find here in Toronto. I was finally able to find it at a speed and custom shop in Woodbridge called LUPO'S AUTOWORLD . The had the convertible KIT which included the cleaner and the Fabric Guard (sold together in a box) for $35. The identical products, sold separately, were available for $28. Go figure. The owner pointed it out to me and so I went without the nice box! He also sells the 303 Protectant which is a completely different product which I’ll use on the rubber etc. The latter product was only available at West Marine. They do not carry the Fabric Guard or roof cleaner products.
So, I lightly sprayed on the Fabric Guard and I stopped when it began to bead up ever so slightly.(see closeup pic). I’ll let it dry for 24 hours and then do a second coat and let that dry for 24 or more hours.
I’m really looking forward to the finished job! I’ll be putting the car into hibernation for about 3 or 4 months. When I bring it out again, I’ll take another one of those famous “rinse the roof” video which is certain to impress the heck out of me!
