Default Street true Duals

Howdy Folks,

Anybody out there ever whip up a Street Legal dual exhaust set-up?

I saw the thread about the off-road duals. Very cool but sorta LOUD. I'm looking for a street system. I want to hear individual exhaust pulses at idle and low speed. A nice purr/growl thing. The "y" pipe muddies-up the sound. I wanta' hear budda-budda-budda-budda at idle not whrrr-Hmmm.

Plan on re-using the stock tips; I think they are a crucial styling element.

Cheers,

Slim

That is going to require a big block v8, short block v8 with a serious cam, or a Harley. I don't believe you will ever get that with a v6.

Actually a buddy of mine with his 4.3L V6 manages to pull it off, albeit with custom headers and 3" dual exhaust. Getting that kind of plumbing to fit under the Xfire would take a lot of doing though.

I think your buddy is on to something with the large tubing size.
Technically there's no reason to go to any larger than 2 inch duals with a less than 200 cubic inch engine. Flow velocity equals torque etc.

But...the resonant frequency of a tube drops as the size and length increases. Look at the low notes of a big pipe organ. The longer and bigger the pipe, the lower the exhaust note. Fitting this theory to the Crossfire with a 94 inch wheelbase may indeed present a challenge !

Once I get this thing broken-in, I may get my pipe bending buddy to make mock-up a system using cheap non-stainless tube and mufflers. If after driving it around for a while, I decide I'm in love with the sound, I can drop some serious change on a purdy stainless version for long-term use.

One thing I'm determined to avoid is the dreaded 2-3 grand interior drone !

I'll update y'all in a couple months...

It's a German vehicle...it shouldn't sound like a muscle car. It needs to have a nicely pitched whine sound with a throaty sucking of the intake, idk that's just me.

I actually find it nice that the car has that 'muted power' sound... when my super charger kicks in it's really mean sounding, but I can still hear what the car is doing (suspension, engine, trans, etc.).

To each his or her own...

i say go for it ... it will be difficult with this engine however as the intake flow is tuned really well and exhaust velocity is high so getting exhaust flow velocity low enough for the burps will be interesting...

some lopey cams would do the trick but the kleeman ones will not do the trick as they are very mild.

Years ago when I had my VW van my old man took an aluminum vacuum cleaner hose, jammed it onto the end of my muffler, bent it upward and attached it to the back corner of my van. It curved out at the top resembling what you see on semi's, kinda cool back then (we were doing all kinds of sick things to our vans, 'member?). Anyway, the extra length of tubing really added to the sound of that puny 4 cyl., gave it that burbling sound for sure which I did like! (ok, I was a kid, gimme a break).

I've been thinking about a true dual system as well. I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to fab up a real exhaust system, and would be a lot cheaper and probably better sounding than the borla system.

To do the system, I guess it would be best to run twin 2" pipes from the headers, go to test pipes, pull back together in a single center muffler. I like the exhaust tips already, so I'd definitely keep that.

I guess we'd be looking around $400 max for this system if you know the right people. I live in an area that doesn't have emissions inspections, so I wouldn't have to worry about it being street legal.

So would twin 2" pipes be big enough? I have a 2005 Ltd. 6sp
