does the car really take two air filters?

Yes one on each side.

If you're buying K&N's you will need 2 filters = 2 boxes.
If you buy the cheapo Fram etc. you will still need 2 filters, but a lot of them come two in a box, so you will only need 1 box - a lot of auto stores do not realise this last snippet of information.
