Default Noise from alternator

HI can anyone help

I have a strange noise coming from the alternator, i have been told it could be the bearing in the pulley. I spoke to Chrysler an was told that you cant just change the pulley you have to change the whole alternator £580 +fitting if its a Bosch or £720+ fitting if its a Valliant, what a rip off the cars only done 24,000 miles and is not even 4 years old yet, Has anyone just changed there pulley. Thanks

The pulley does not have a bearing. Look on ebay for the alternator and fix it yourself, it's easy to do. It should be at least 1/3 the cost.
Make sure it is the alternator first and not something else.

There is a couple of ways to check to see if it's the alt, one is back off the tensior for the belt a little bit while the engine is running and see if the noise changes any, or you can get a long pry bar, or simular and put it on the alt and then the other end to your ear also while engine running, if the bearings are bad you should hear a lot of growling, if not there check all your other pulley's and such the same way to narrow it down, BUT BE VERY CAREFULL WHEN DOING EITHER STEP for your safety.

Thanks for your advice, i took the car to an alternator specialist and its not the alternator so im going to get a pipe and have a listen too see if i can pin point where its coming from. the funny thing about the noise is you can only hear it when its ticking over, as soon as the revs go up a little (800RPM) the noise goes, and if you leave the car standing for a week then go for a drive it takes about an hour of driving before the noise comes back

Took the car to a merc specialist so they can check out this strange noise, works out it was the alternator.
they gave me a price for a new valeo alternator and to fit £495, main dealer quoted £1200 so i went ahead and got it done.

It may not be the alternator, with the engine off! grab the water pump and really try to move it up and down, when running with a bad water pump you will hear a grumbling noise. If this is the case you can buy a new one at NAPA or autozone for about 180 us.

Got the same problem with noise
It sounds like a cat purring at idle
(Loud then soft-Loud and soft)
when i raise the rpm its gone or drive it for an hour
a local company had the alternator apart
and replace the bushings and didnt fix it
removed the belt and it is the alternator
Its friggin weird.
