For those that gutted an NA muffler?
I am trying to find something midway between the current Magnaflow I have and the stock system for loudness.
I have an OEM system on the way. I want to only cut a hole large enough for what is needed. Would only removing the packing get me what I want? Or must I remove the rear baffles as well?

I gutted mine, you're gonna have to cut about a 10x10 hole in the top of the muffler.
I didnt remove everything, I removed the packing and the perforated rear section, then had the cover welded back on

why not use an amg muffler? free flowing and has a nice sound. i have 1 i bought from 240m3srt, no tips but complete amg srt-6 muffler
You can see my gallery where I gutted the srt muffler and then removed it cause it was a bit louder but no better. I rewelded the stainless cover and all with little gain. I then added the stainless 4" wye pipe with better sounds and less weight. Woody see the photos.

If you have a magnaflow muffler, please try this first. Cut the bottom off a coke can and press it into one side of the magnaflow muffler. Try it like this, if too quiet, punch holes in the can bottom with a long rod until you get it to sound like you want.

I picked up a second OEM system from a forum member to do this. Also thanks to Shawnkey for posting his picture of a muffler without the shell. It helped a bunch.
I used a cutoff tool to get the access. It took two wheels to get thru the stainless. The cut on three sides is aprox 4" x 13". The fourth side I used as a hinge. In the next day or two it will be welded back together.
Two different materials are used in this muffler. Long strands of steel wool wrapped the baffles. The remaining area was filled with fiberglass insulation.

Got home today with some time to switch out the exhaust. Removed my Magnaflow very easy. A little tough getting the rear rubbers back on the OEM even with the hanger tool, but eventually it went on.



Couldn't wait to start it up and take a test drive.
Guess what?
It is just as quiet as the OEM with all the stuffing! NO DIFFERENCE.
Now to figure out plan B I guess...

I'm probably too late but anyway. I opened two stock mufflers and here's what I did (sorry no pictures available):
Muffler 1:
- removed all the packing - everything
- removed the perforated kidney shaped section
- in the section where the packing material has been: drilled 3 additional holes of 0.4in diameter in every tube (the perforated AND the unperforated)
Muffler 2:
- removed 50% of the packing
- removed the perforated kidney shaped section
- in the section where the packing material has been: drilled 2 additional holes of 0.3in diameter in the perforated tubes and 1 hole of 0.3in diameter in each unperforated tubes
Here's how I think the stuff changes sound/noise:
Packing: Noise damping at higher rpm's and roughness of sound
Kidney: Overall noise level
Holes: The holes in the unperforated tubes have the greatest effect - it's like avoiding the muffler since a short connection between inlet tubes and outlet tubes is created
Both Mufflers are only noticable when you step on the gas - at cruising speed they're pretty close to stock. Muffler 1 has a bit deeper sound is overall louder than Muffler 2.
Both are nowhere near a Magnaflow regarding noise level but also regarding sound. On the other hand are both mufflers better than stock in both aspects.

Guyz I said that the gutting of the muffler made no difference to me, I cut out the entire tubing and baffel without gain. Thats why I went to my wye pipe design. Woody

Am i missing something here? To me it looks like the SRT-Muffler is a different layout then the N/A-Muffler. And if i remember correct the SRT has an additional resonator too. So basically: What works for the SRT may not work for the N/A and vice versa.
When you go full throttle both modified N/A mufflers I described above sound different/louder compared to a stock muffler. But the sound isn't as deep and loud as a Magnaflow - and it's certainly not as refined as the Magnaflow catback.

Well guys, no matter what I did to the OEM muffler, I did not like the sound. The noise level wasn't bad, just sounded terrible to me. Stuffed everything back in there, welded her back up and as good as stock, maybe quieter.
So reading on another forum (sin?), wrapping an aftermarket muffler will actually quiet down the interior noise in the car. So that is what I did. It is raining so I didn't take my clean car out of the garage yet to see the results. It does sound different when I rev it. Time will tell, and at the Dragon. James

check mine out at the dragon james. oem amg muffler with res and sec. cat delete. x pipe in place of y pipe. quiet in the neighborhood and screams at wot
