Question Occasional burning smell when idling or upon turning off

I have an 06 Roadster limited with 40k miles on it. I have driven it for 4k miles of the 40k and it has been great. However, it has recently developed this "burning" smell upon idling or turning off the engine. It is not a consistent smell, but when your 15 year old daughter asks what is burning when driving with the top down or getting out when parked, something must be wrong. I am a car guy, so the car is well maintained, up to date on everything, fluids are full and fresh, no leaks-nothing on the block or driveway, etc...

I am really not sure where to look next, but the smell leads me to believe "something" is not right. Help from anyone who has had a Crossfire and experienced this would be great.

Thank you,

I noticed the same thing and it was oil coming from the filter stick thing but only at start up. Check it when the motor is cold and u first start it

This was the same for Bat's '08 Roadster with 11k miles on it at the time.
I fixed it up late last summer, and the burning smell hasn't been back since.

Mine is an 06 roadster . it only had 18500 when we started noticing the burning smell. I just used grey RTV on the covers ( recomended by a friend that is a Chrysler lead tech ) and it has been great since.

Oil leak at the small cover on the valve cover. Mine happened at 500 miles. Sorta fixed under warranty, correctly fixed by owner a few months later. The other side started leaking and smelling at 5000 miles. Fixed by owner. No burning smell since. (2006 SRT-6)

Thumbs up Re: Occasional burning smell when idling or upon turning off

This post is a bit old but just in case anyone comes along
in the future, I would like to add that I also had the
burning rubber / Plastic smell from under the hood
or the front vent. When Idle or parked after a trip
and it was in fact a valve cover gasket fix.
The oil would leak and burn off causing the smell

I would even get a small amount of smoke visible best at night
and by illuminating slowly with a flashlight around or under the spark plug area the smell is pretty strong you cant really miss it.

The problem can either be on the passenger side or driver side each side needs a gasket and they are both different size / shape
in my case it was the passenger side. So I only needed to replace
the passenger side

The gasket for the passenger side was about 20$ got it online and my mechanic charged me 55$ to replace it, it took about 30 min, . No problems no stinky smell either after fix all was fine

Good luck!
