Default Normal engine rpm

I have an 04, 5-speed auto. I recently purchased this, so I have no idea what is normal or not. It seems that in 5th gear, the engine rpm at 65 mph is around 2400. This seems kinda high to me. Is this normal? I know this isn't a mini-van or a mega mpg car, but it sure cuts into the milage. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks

This is the forum troubleshooting forum, your question goes in Engine and Exhaust or Technical and Modifications.

But to answer your question, 2400 at 65 is normal, and at 80, it'll be virtually 3000 rpm. I have an auto roadster and a stick -there is not a dime's worth of difference in the engine speeds between them in top gear at 65 or 80.

Not sure what you expected for fuel mileage with this car. Nearly everyone gets close to the EPA rating for these cars. That would be 21 City/28 Hwy. My 07 with Auto-Stick averaged 24.2 last year for all combined driving, and has averaged 23.6 since I bought it in 4Q/2008. On the long trips I've taken in the car, I'm probably getting around 26 mpg. And during these long trips, I'm usually 'enjoying' the car. So I figure a couple of mpg below EPA Hwy rating isn't all that bad.

These are great, little, performance 2-seaters that get fairly good gas mileage considering. But they're not 30 mpg commuters! MHO

Good 'heads-up' by pizzaguy on where to place your post. Makes it easier for you to get the feedback you're looking for and also makes it easier for the rest of us to find your thread if similar issue surfaces. Troubleshooting in this case are for problems that arise on The Forum itself, not with our cars.

GTRGUY - By the way, where in Nebraska are you located? If you're near Omaha, I might have a Crossfire I'd like you to look at up close for me. Let me know.
