AutoZone Mobil 1 Sale
$29.99 for 5 quarts Mobil 1 (includesl 0W-40) with a Bosch filter. Good, but not great deal, that equates to about $4.50 to $5/qt depending on how you value the filter. Sale let's you upgrade to a M1 filter for $4 more.
Not as good as the $3.99/qt from Advance Auto last year, but M1 sales/rebates have been scarce lately. There's also a lot of internet chatter predicting oil prices increasing by summer, so you may want to jump on this deal if you have an upcoming oil change.
The Bosch filter can go in your DD since most of us are Mann fleece fanatics.

I'm with you in that I have no idea how it's made either, although here's a quote from the Exxon/Mobil website indicating that crude oil is used in synthetic oil development:
"Both types of engine oil are made from crude oil that comes from the ground. The difference is that synthetic oils undergo numerous additional highly-advanced distilling, refining, and purification processes — and therefore are of a higher purity and quality than conventional mineral oils. This not only removes more impurities from the original crude, it also enables the engineering of the lubricant’s individual molecules to be uniform and consistent, tailored to meet the specific high-performance demands of modern engines. These customized molecules provide higher levels of protection and performance, even in extreme conditions"

here's the basics. It can be purely syn, or mostly so, or partially so, but it's more than just better filtered or refined. More like re-engineered.
Look at it this way if the molecules of oil were ball bearings and all your engine parts rode on them the synthetic would be all the same size and would therefore wear evenly (breakdown at the same rate) and conventional motor oil has all different size molecules (bearings) which the larger would break down faster because all the friction and wear would be on them before they broke down and the smaller size took over the load or wear.
