Backfire
Re: Backfire
Are you hearing the backfiring or are you just feeling the "sputtering"?
Is it constant or is it random?
Did this just start recently or has it been an ongoing problem?
If it just started recently, did you get gas from a new place?
It may be moisture in your gas - maybe try adding a bottle of Heet (or some other moisture remover) and see if that helps?

Re: Backfire
I am hearing the backfire. It is going on now for almost 2 weeks. It is getting progressively more and more frequent. I'm getting gas from the same place as I always do. Fuel filter Is going to be changed tomorrow. New spark plug wires and coil packs will be installed the following day as soon as they arive. Tha car is completely stock.

Re: Backfire
Having timing that is too late (retarded) can cause this same thing sometimes if your engine is running too rich. When the exhaust valve opens, the mixture isn't done burning so it ignites the unburned fuel in the exhaust system and causes a loud bang.
Try doing a throttle reset first.
1. Get in your car
2. Turn the key to the on (not start) position, the position just before the starter
turns over.
3. Press the gas pedal to the floor with the key in the "on" position.
4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back
to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas
pedal.
5. Wait 2 mins. for a full alignment.
6. Drive the car as you always do.
Bottle of Seafoam in the gas tank wouldn't hurt either....
