Default engine temps, slight backfire

I'm new to the forum and have just purchased an SRT-6 with 340 miles. Having owned only Toyotas for the past 15 years, I wonder if someone can enlighten me on the supercharged engine. When driving in town, the temp needle is just a tick above half-way. It goes to just under half-way when on the open road. When I rev the engine a bit (say 4k rpm), the exhaust emits a slight backfire. Is this normal?

I thought I'd post here because this is the engine forum. Thanks!!!

Not sure about the backfire, but the temps sound normal to me.

My temps run the same, it is normal.
As for the backfire, does it sound like a real backfire or just some gurgling type noise?

temp is fine.

high RPM backfire could be bad plugs or cables

My temp runs about the same, just above half in traffic and just below half on the open road. As for the backfire............no clue. But ask yourself a couple of questions and this should narrow it down.

1) Does it backfire thru the exhaust or thru the intake ?
2) Does it backfire on acceleration or after you accelerate and let off the gas ?
3) Is it a single detonation or several intermediate low volume "pops" ?

These are questions the dealer will ask (or should ask) if you bring it in to have this checked out.

Thanks for all of the replies!

When it just sits idling on the driveway and I rev it up to say around 4k rpm, it emits intermitent low-volume gurgling noises from the exhaust (rear) after I release the accelerator. I'm wondering if this is normal, too.

My Toyotas don't do that and this is the first Mercedes-based product I've ever owned. I love the car, though. This new corvette pulled behind me going down a straight-away today, on my bumper to see what I would/could do. I depressed the accelertator half-way and left him in the the distance. I was going 100 before I knew it. He didn't follow me after that.

Exhaust burble on the overrun could mean the engine is running rich/lean. I hear this a lot on turbocharged cars when the throttle is slapped shut and the car goes into full vacuum.

Is your car throwing any codes/CEL?

For some reason, "backpressure" comes to mind.

The popping or gurgling is unburnt gas exploding in the exhaust, which is why you hear it after you let off it from punching it. The gas was fed at a large amount, then all of a sudden not, but there is still fuel in the cylinder that is exhausted out and fires in the pipes, after the fact.

If your in your driveway that means your not moving. When your not moving the car has a 4000rpm rev limiter so you can't do violant neutral drops.

What your hearing is the ignition/ fuel cut of the rev limiter.

Your good, just drive it.

again, thank you everyone for enlightening a newbie to the world of superchargers and crossfires. i love my car and am just used to a completely different driving experience (ie; predictable toyota...not that it's a bad thing) to "car is one with every sensory input in your body and can blow most everything off the road in the process." i learn something new here everyday.
