2004 Auto Coupe Transmission 'Clunk' - Any ideas?
Hi,
I've had my Crossfire nearly 10 years now and this is my first issue:
When I move the shifter from 'park' to 'reverse' I get a big clunk and shudder from the transmission.
It improves once the car is warm, but it feels like it must be doing damage!
The box changes smoothly and pulls strongly through the gears when driving, it just seems to happen from the 'P' position.
The gearbox has done 130,000 kms (80,000 miles).
Any ideas?

First, check the guibo's ( flex disks ), one at each end of the drive shaft for cracking or disintegration.
Then check the one U joint at the drive shaft center bearing, as well as the bearing itself.
Also put the transmission in neutral and check for excessive play at the rear end by rocking the driveshaft back and forth.
You should be able to detect just a very slight play.

My rule: No matter what the book says, auto trans fluid and filter gets changed at 50-60,000 miles.
But that's just me.
