Default Drone With New Megan Exhaust

Hey guys, I just got the Megan MR-S muffler installed and theres only one thing that I'm not a fan of. The dreaded drone. Ive read a lot on this forum about how to solve the drone. Some say add a resonator before the muffler, some say go with a Helmholtz resonator install. Im not sure what works best but any input on how to hill off this horrendous drone is much appreciated.

Has anyone on the forum done a Helmholtz custom install on their n/a? or even their srt? I told my exhaust guy about it and he basically said he's never heard of it and its just not possible.I truly believe it is though, anything is possible. Any help is much appreciated.

After all the different exhaust systems I have installed and experimented with on the Crossfire, I have concluded you will have drone with any system that is loud. There is a threshold to keep the drone away, but the exhaust won't be as loud as you want it to be to sound aggressive. Just my opinion.

James,

What would you say is the best thing to keep the drone away? Even if it quiets it down a tad, I am fine with it.

P.S.- Love your car! Absolutely beautiful. What paint did you use on the wheels?

Check out what this guy has for sale. Includes baffles? Not sure what that is about.

He is probably selling it because it drones to much.

Trueeee but do any of you guys know if a side branch resonator will fix? or if a chambered muffler before the Megan exhaust will? Mine comes with the baffles too, but it does a great job of silencing the exhaust. Almost too well haha.

I'm sorry that I can't answer your question specifically, but until you figure out your drone/resonance issue, you can reduce the drone a little by opening a window a bit, and staying in a lower gear when possible; keeping the RPM's up. Ear plugs would help,ha ha. Stuff the back hatch area with large pillows. At your age, going back to stock is probably not an option right? For me, at my age, it's not an option either! I have an SRT6 and went with Needswings downpipes,Magnaflow truX crossover, and SRT6 Magnaflow muffler, and I'm very happy with it. Figure out your drone for the N/A and you will be a hero here on the Forum. Best of luck to you.

I dumped the muffler and left the resonator. Opened up the second cats too. Sound is good , no drone. The mufflers shown look to be more noise than youd want. Woody

Dina, Hoping an x pipe will help but I'm not sure. Hopefully I can figure it out and if I can I will let this forum know the second it happens.

Woody, I have an NA, I don't believe theres a resonator under there for me, just the muffler! do you think an x pipe in place of the secondary cats would kill it?

Could you post a sound clip?

I’m dealing with drone issues too. I have an eBay can that is similar to the Megan unit, except for even less volume and quality! I think there are two parts to this problem.
1. Reduced exhaust pipe length
2. Reduced volume.

The OEM muffler has a big chamber and loops the flow.

SRT6 guys complain less about drone. Could be because of the added length of the pipe going to/from the res, compared to the NA exhaust. I think you could solve some of your problem by taking the exhaust on the longest route you could fit under the car with a 180 degree bend that follows where the SRT6 resonator goes. Or use a 180 degree muffler from Flowmaster or spin tech, which would also help your volume.

I’ve added a branch pipe and a small res. Didn’t do much. My exhaust guy didn’t really do what I asked with the branch pipe, so it might work if your exhaust guy listens. Bolt in silencers for the tips did a lot.

I think two 4x9 offset oval cans, mounted vertically to a Flowmaster super 10 (acting as a y pipe) would give you the added volume you need. This is the setup I’m thinking about. ends up being a 9” wide and 9” tall package that can tuck up into the cavity like the OEM unit. (In theory)

Also considering putting the stock muffler back in with some different tips. I know it works. Doesn’t drone a bit. Too quiet at WOT, but nice when getting around town.

Ok this is what I did after removing stock muffler and installing a Magnaflow muffler. Really liked the new sound of the Magnaflow but the drone between 2100 and 2800 RPM,s was really bad
and drove me crazy. After researching a Helmholtz Resonator on a Nissan forum I found the formula for a 1/4 wave resonator they also tried X pipes with no luck. With this formula I was able to target this RPM range and the frequency in Hz of the drone sound at 200 degrees exhaust temp. I had a J pipe or branch resonator made to this specific length and welded into the exhaust before the muffler.
WOW could not believe the difference, it starts at about 2000 RPM,s at 2500 RPM,s you can hardly hear the exhaust at all totally dead, around 2900 RPM,s the drone is gone and you can really hear the exhaust, sounds really good. What it does is bounce a 1/4 wave back into the exhaust at that RPM and cancels that specific frequency really works well !!!!!
PM me if you want the details of the formula and my specific build.

Why I redid my exhaust how I did, night and day difference.
nice and calm with my hours and hours of interstate driving every week.
but has a good sound "outside" if I more aggressive

Speedy, whats the secret formula? Unless its too top secret you don't want to share

Yellowhammer, I'd love the formula! Adding a side branch resonator until I have enough money saved up for the needswings downpipes lol

no seceret, I don't remember if I made a thread or posted in another, but posted lots of pics and sound clip.
did 3 different ways.
took the damn shop 3 tries to put the muffler where I wanted it.
One of the times they took the rear cats out and dual from there back and did the same damn bend around the differential then the muffler and they cut down my $$$ quad angled and slant cut tips.
the drone and sound was horrid, took back a week later and he put the mf dual in / out where I wanted, in place of the rear cats, then dual 2.25 back, they ran the pipe alittle straighter than I wanted (makes it hang down lower) but I have not had a problem with dragging, and some of the places I have been, I was surprised, then a gradual swooping bend around the differential and to the quad tips, angled and slanted (I really like the tips how they match the back angle of the number) and was a huge difference, it is louder out the back. I argued with the exhaust shop, he said it would be quicker with the muffler farthest back, but after he did it and got rid of the sharp bends he said he couldn't believe the difference, the gradual swoop help keeps the sound resonance from bouncing back into the exhaust.

I would be more than glad to meet up with some members to see what they think, I have tried, but have not been able to.
I will be around henderson ky working probably till the end of the year.

I have had many comments on how it sounds when I get on it.
not near as loud as my 76 cj7, but that has a whole lot of motor work and the 304 amc block turning upto 8k rpms in mud drags, alot of fun though
