Default 2004 auto tranny won't shift from Park/ Secondary Air Injection

my 2004 coupe base model with auto tranny, had been sitting parked for over a month. Just replaced the battery last night, after old was completely dead. Engine starts fine but can't move shift selector from park. BAS/ESP light is on. Brake petal felt slightly softer than normal.
When vehicle was parked, I was getting Codes PO410 "Secondary Air Injection System" and I think a PO174. I checked all connectors, cleaned them and put dielectric silicone in connectors before putting back together. I straight wired the pump to battery to make sure it operates, which it does. I have also checked most all of the vacuum hoses and replaced same as needed.
Don't know what else to do for either problem...

In your shifter there is a little trap door you can insert a screwdriver into so you can move the shifter in an emergency situation or complete loss of battery power. It is to the rear of the "D". Pictures are below.

As for the secondary air injection, it's typically a bad relay or a good relay with dirty contacts in the Relay Control Module. Fairly simple to clean if you are handy.

Thanks Jared. I’ve been looking at threads on the 2ndary air injection. I’ve made a list of things to check from my reading this morning.

As for the shifter not coming out of park, I didn’t find much about possible causes. The car was parked for maybe 3-5 months. Something seems to be drawing the battery down and did to the point I had to replace the battery.

I’m going to try the shifter release trick in a few minutes. If I can get it out of Park and move it closer to the house, I will then look at the relay, fuse and ground wire under pump bolt.

If the traction control relay in the RCM has an issue, this can lock the shifter.
The air control relay ( also in the RCM ) can cause the secondary air codes.
Bottom line, send an email to tighed1@hotmail.com about getting the RCM rebuilt.

2 relay possibilities..... interesting.

Look for a power supply issue.... AKA, check all of the RCM fuses. It's been sitting, so it wouldn't hurt to pull them out and pop them back in. Clean up the contacts a little.

Thanks y’all ! Unfortunately it began raining again and was getting dark on me, so I didn’t get to check out all of the suggestions that you’ve provided.

I did use a screwdriver in the hole to release the shifter and was able to drive around my yard a couple laps before parking again.

I did notice this evening that the brake lights are not coming on with foot on the pedal. So next question:
is the brake light switch & shift interlock all in one unit just above the brake pedal? Could this be the shifter problem? Anybody have part # for this ?
I still intend to chase the fuses and the relays, rcm as suggested.

Could be a defective brake light switch, it pulls double duty and unlocks the Park interlock when the ignition is on.

Checking fuses is the best place to start though, seeing as the car was coming out of Park before it was parked, leads me to believe that a little bit of corrosion may have set up somewhere. Fuses or brake switch, etc.

Jared

BTW, did the BAS/ESP light go out yet?

If not, start the car and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times. It'll reset the steering angle sensor.

I believe the brake light/pedal is connected to the shifter electronically. You can't take the car out of park unless your foot is on the brake. The brake lights do not come on unless the ignition switch is turned on. Once the brake lights work, the car can be moved out of park. It follows the lock out is tied electrically somehow and the brake light switch makes sense. Are your brake lights working if no it's probably the switch, if yes its probably in the shifter somewhere, or the wiring to the shifter. Just my conclusion. Haven't checked schematics, and won't. I hate schematics, too hard on my eyes.

I did the steering wheel lock to lock and that took care of the BAS/ESP light 😮

Good, it means there is nothing wrong with your traction control.

You can investigate the fuses and or brake light switch in the daylight.

Good luck and we're here when you need us.

This so far has been one of the best forums I’ve been on. I’m learning a lot with the help of y’all!

my other favorite forum has been Turbo Diesel Register with lots of good people there who I’ve learned a lot from for my 1st Generation Dodge Cummins D-350.
by chance where can I get a part number for that brake/interlock switch. Nearby we gave Napa, Carquest, Advance & AutoZone parts stores. Dealers are a last resort for me as they are good for being idiots & ridiculous prices

I'm a Rock-Auto man myself.

If you got on RA, you could look for the part and it will give you a few part numbers.

It usually gives a manufacturers part number to cross reference as well.

Brake pedal position switch is something different and I think is for the BAS/ESP system. If your brakes have air in them, or you sever a brake hose, the pedal position switch sends a signal that the pedal is depressed too far and triggers the warning light.

Again I want to thank everyone for their input to help me out.
I haven’t had the time to work on the car the last few days. When I last worked on the XF, I removed each fuse, cleaned the fuses & fuse sockets, applied a light film of dielectric silicone & replaced the fuses. Did not check the relay contacts yet. Still no brake lights & shifter still won’t move from Park unless I use screwdriver in the release hole.
I also cleaned them ground beside the battery & removed the 3 ground wires & cleaned terminal on left side near the fuse block. All were good.
The BAS/ESP light went out when I used the lock to lock method to reset steering angle sensor.
I have run an OBDII scan twice. Because I discon next the battery each time I stop for the day, I was not getting any codes, pending or otherwise. The 2nd scan I run, after the car had been idling about 10 minutes, the engine idled down & cut off. Restarted immediately and a couple minutes later, stalled again. It didn’t immediately restart. When it finally started again, the scan tool then showed a code PO 151, o2 sensor Bank 2.
I bought a brake light switch from Carquest, but haven’t put that in yet. Also got the blue check valve for the air injection, but haven’t put that in yet either...
Not sure if I will have time to get back to work on the XF this week, between my job & the weather & repairs on my house.

How old is your battery, and is your rear spoiler doing anything funky when you are hooking the battery up and/or cycling the ignition?

My battery is brand new. 14.6v w / engine running.
Rear spoiler was acting a little funky when car was parked months ago, such as spoiler deployed after car was parked and shut off...

Good, uncommanded spoiler activation is a sign of a weak battery.

Sounds like you took care of it though.

These cars are funky when it comes to the electrical. They don't care for any sort of low voltage.
