Really? I've been here since 2009, do not remember anyone experiencing that. And keep in mind that codes relating to the cats are interpretive codes - the cause does not always match the description of the code.

Many have gone catless - mostly for the sound they get, can't remember someone replacing 'bad' cats, altho I'm sure it's happened, just not very often.

I have just under 250k on this XF, and since I bought it nearly a year ago have done a major tune up on it consisting of new fuel pump, filter, fuel injectors, coils, plugs, wires, air filters, cam and crank sensors, egr valve, maf, and pcv hoses, and primary O2 sensors. Every sensor replaced is bosch. With the mileage on it and completely unknown service history im pretty sure the cat codes are cat related. The exhaust sound in the cabin is reminiscent of hollowed out cats. And if the car is idling and you open stand behind it, the exhaust smells rich.

I'd be looking at live data before I just accept it as "the cats are bad". Of course, you may find the previous owner did something..................... questionable. Which is what I think you are already implying.
OF course, 250k is a near record, which does make the idea that the cats are crap a bit more believable. Tricia in GA drove her's to either 218,000 or 228,000 and never did cats. The lady who bought it is doing cosmetic stuff to it, not sure what else she has planned. But for $1000, she got a good buy.
