Question Which engine oil should I choose: 5W30 or 5W40?

Which engine oil to choose: 5W30 or 5W40?
The user manual says to use 0W40 oil. I lean more towards 5W40.
But I wanted to ask what kind of oil do you use for the engine in the Crossfire?

5W40 is also recommended by Mercedese.

The manual and the sticker on the car are 20 years old. MB changed the recommendation to 5W40 in 2010. Fifteen years ago, months after I bought my first Crossfire.

You can use ANY oil on this list, but notice that it leans, now, to 5W40 and 10W40. MB has moved to heavier weights to protect against engine wear.
For areas of cold (outdoor temps below perhaps 40-45F) where you start the engine COLD a lot, I'd go with 0W40. But living in Texas there is no way I'd put that stuff in my engine.
Put an oil pressure gauge on the engine and you will see why I say that.

Thanks for your replies.
It looks like I have the answer now, but if anyone else would like to share what oil they run in their Crossfire, I'd be happy to read it.

I've used both 0w40 & 5W40 Mobil1 European Car Formula. More recently, I'll buy a gallon container of 5W40 and add 3 quarts of 0w40 when I do an oil change. The 8 quarts fills the oil pan up to the Full Mark on the dipstick.

Just curious, why mix grades?

Since I've already asked you about the type of engine oil, I'll also ask what kind of petrol you use in your Crossfires?
I initially filled up with 95 petrol, because that's what the previous owner filled up with, and that's what the owner's manual recommends.
But then I read that it's better to fill up with 98 petrol for powerful engines in sports cars, and I'm currently using 98 petrol.

Most of us Americans have no clue about what you are asking. I say this because it is my understanding that ratings of gasoline are different over there and our "91 octane" gasoline works out to be your "95 RON" petrol.

Over here, our owner's manuals say "premium fuel only", to be clear, the manual says: "octane of 91 or higher"
Our stations only sell 90 to 93 as "premium" with octane of 89 or a bit less being "Midgrade" and numbers of 85 or so being "regular". In my area, 90 is all I can get.

I run 90 but I also buy 100% gasoline, even in the metro area, just one mile from me, I can buy 90 octane, ethanol-free gas and that is what I run. In my case, this is very important as my car sits a LOT and ethanol is the last thing I want in it if it is going to sit a lot.

The last topic is the oil filter - are you using a paper filter? If so, I'd never buy the car from you. The paper filters crush, allowing unfiltered oil to pass - worst than that, the paper can break free and clog passages. It is of paramount importance to use the fleece filter, they stand up to 80 psi and 220 degree F for THOUSANDS of miles without compromising. My car had a paper filter in it when I brought it home, 1000 miles on it and it had collapsed. I changed the filter and oil right away. I wish I still had a picture of that filter...........

Thanks for the detailed advice.
I'll be changing the oil and filter in February or March, then I'll find out what oil filter is currently installed in my car.

No special reason. Usually happens when one or the other isn't available in both gallon & quart containers when I buy oil.

dedwards0323 thank you for pointing out a specific model of oil filter.
I asked my mechanic to order one and I'm going to him on Thursday to change the oil.

THere are a lot of re-boxed MANN filters out there. Here are two.
DO NOT ask the person at the counter for a filter for a "Crossfire", they will sell you a paper filter.
Ask for one of these below. The counter person will tell you they won't fit a Crossfire - they will.

So today my mechanic changed the oil and the following filters: oil, air, and fuel.
Thank you for all your advice on this topic.

I think so, because the previous owner's last oil change was in 2023, and the fuel filter change was in 2015 - i.e. there is such an inscription on the dismantled fuel filter.
The car's manual states that the fuel filter should be replaced every 96,000 km, and since my car has 213,500 km on the odometer, it was done just right.
