Default Help needed!!!

Hi, I've had my Crossfire about 18 months and have throughly enjoyed driving it.

However, the past couple of weeks I have had a rattling noise coming from the rear, so took it to the local Chrsyler/Mercedes dealer to see if it was just something worked loose or maybe exhaust related.

I've just had the verdict back and apparantly it needs two new catalytic converters which, with labour, will run to around £2,000!!!!

I guess my questions are:

Is there anywhere in the UK where I can source the parts from and are there any non-dealer garages who could do the work any cheaper then Mercedes prices?

Any and all help gratefully received!!

Has your check engine light come on? Generally, a bad cat would throw a code.

You can source the parts through ebay.co.uk at a fraction of the price <£200, also you can try Euro Car Parts.

I am based in Wembley and I can put you in touch with a mechanic local to me that will do the work for a fraction of the cost - he MAY be able to come to your home to do the work.

If you are interested send me a PM and I will give him a call to find out prices.

Regards

I really doubt the cats are the cause of the rattle. Have you ruled out the very common tailgate rattle and latch problem that Chrysler issued a TSB for. It is posted in the SRT6 Documentation section under TSB's.

Good point! I've not had any warning lights come on.

Thanks for that! I've come into Crossfire ownership after a decade and a bit of owning Japanese imports. I've always used a very good mechanic at Euro-Spec 2000 nr Guildford who specalise in Japanese cars so gave him a call and he also doubts if the cats need replacing but is going take a look at it next week.

As an aside, the only other minor complaint about the car I have had in the 18mths I've had it is that every time it rains the fuel filler comparment under the fuel cap door fills with water! Is this a known issue or have I just got a problem with the seals?

There should be a small drain hole in there that might be clogged.

If it is the secondary cats under the car then you will not get a warning light. Those cats are not monitored by the electronics. you can remove them and pick up a few HP. I am not sure how your cars are inspected in the UK and if this is an option. You said the rattling was coming from the rear? the second set of cats are under your feet. The first set which are monitored are up close to the engine exhaust manifolds.

I had the same problem and had only had the car for 2 weeks. fortunately the warranty covered the work. I did read somewhere on here that the warranty on the cat is much longer than many dealers will admit it is so may be worth checking further before you spend lots

You are absolutely right! Not sure about the UK but in the USA the emission warranty is much longer than the standard warranty

8 years or 80,000 miles for the catalytic converter and powertrain control module in the USA.
