Default Windshield Tint

Sidez asked me to post a couple of picture of my SRT showing my tint job.

I was running with 5% all around and 40% on the windshield - I got busted for the tint but the shop did such a great job that the officer could not find the edge of the tint on the windshield - so I stripped the tint off the door windows and went to the police department to get the fix-it ticket signed off. That officer also said - my windshield is tinted - but he could not find the edge so I told him it was factory glass. He informed me I could have any darkness of glass on any window of my car.

The CA law only prohibits "Film Covering" permanent or removable, but not dark glass. I am on the hunt for replacement windows for the sides that are factory dark (5% - 15%) so I can be legal.

With these pictures I have 5% on the rear and small side glass, 15% on the doors and 40% on the windshield.

It can be pretty dark at night (with no street lights) thru the door windows, but I have no problems seeing thru the windshield at night when I am out of the city.

BTW - the HP also nailed me for no plates but I was still waiting for the DMV to deliver my personalized plates. When the plates arrived I just velcro’ed the front plate to the bumper and when in for an inspection - no problemo.

Funny part was I put it on in the parking lot and as I walked into the front office I though - I bet they saw me on the surveillance camera - I looked at the monitor and the camera showed my car but not past the front wheel. Talk about funny.

i just did 35% (legal limit in sc) on my 3 sides. word of warning if you have a navi system - look for a film made with ceramic. most film is tinted with a metal. i'm told the metal could interfere with the gps signal as well as cell signals.

If you have a coupe, the metallic film will interfere with AM (sports talk shows ) radio reception.

the best shops here do a "file" method on the side windows ... using a fine file in one direction at the top of the film leaves no edge at all to be seen. looks just like factory tint. have seen this done on several cars and it is definately the way my xf is getting done. fortunately i have a very good shop near me that does tint only and the owner is the operator ... very nice facility as well and you can watch as he does the work as he has couches and flat panel with cable. ahhh now thats customer service lol.

My local guy also charges a $25 one time fee upon installation just in case you get a ticket...you can take the car back there and have him remove the tint until you get the ticket cleared...then he just re-applies the tinting. Not sure if everyone does this...but it might be something you could ask.

i have 20 percent on top of the factory tint so i dont know what it would make it. its not hard to see at night its just something your eyes get use to. and from what i was told if tint is removed you can not just put it back on. tint is put on with a glue that if ripped off will ruin the ripped off tint and make it very smudged and dirty looking.

what is your laws on tint? because factory tint will probably put you at 30% if your trying to make it legal. mine is 20 and i dont think it is dark enough still. i like people not to see me haha.

It's illegal in most states to tint your front windshield except for the top 4 - 5 inches. This link has most state tint laws.

the front window on my car is not tinted for a few reasons.
1. its very illegal.
2. it makes it very hard to see in the rain.
3. when i talked to the tint guy he said that it is a safety matter and that when you tint your window it makes it stronger and that if an accident would happen you could hit the windshield and not go through but just kill yoursself on the window. the funny thing is that he was telling me this while he was tinting all my other windows.

If me or my passenger are:

1 Not wearing our seatbelts.
2 Make it past the airbags during an accident.
3 Flying or not flying through the windshield will be the least of my concerns.

With that said - windshield tint darker then 40% will give you visual problems at night - I did mention it can be pretty dark looking out my side windows (15%) at night in dark areas (If there are street lights - It's no problem).

The real reason for prohibiting windshield tint is red light cameras - they can't get a good picture of you when you run the red light.

That's exactly right. It's all about money, with "safety" as a convenient fig-leaf excuse. Most local elected officials are nothing but a pack of patronizing thieves that use traffic laws as a cash cow because they know full well that they would be thrown out of office if they tried to raise taxes any other way.

Totally illegal in Canada, only portion that can be tinted is upper portion and must be part of OEM Specs. They use a refractor meter to gauge glass. No tint allowed on front sides, only side rears and back, no tint linitations.
In Ontario It's an automatic fine, Quebec some City's can Impound car.
Not worth the hassle.

That's why I live in California - just $10 fix-it ticket.

Can you imagine an officer pulling out a refractor gauge and then calling a tow truck on your AS*? - Over Tint?

Thumbs down Re: Windshield Tint

Yupp I live in Quebec and that's not all we are getting Photo Radar as well, unmarked van with radar equipment in it snaps photo as you drive by now

On top of that they will be handing out $125 fines if you have anything covering the plate. Idiot politicians

Lowered suspension (modified not allowed) illegal, they use db meters for loud exhausts it's getting truly pathetic. Cellphone use banned(at least they got that one right) while driving. They look like gestapo and act like it too...

So on top of being the most taxed place in North America they have all kinds of fines for stupidities.

The funny thing is I've seen some pretty stupid driving on the 401...and it's usually the Ontario Provincial Police! (I always thought OPP stood for something else, but that's a whole different matter!)

Last time I was on the 401, I saw a cop Go sliding through the median doing a u-turn so he could race over and pull someone over. Half of the grass he turned up ended up on the Easbound lanes, and he BRUTALLY cut off some lady in a minivan, who almost got rear-ended!

Good to know they are looking out for our safety!
