Matte Finish
Here is an interesting story from today's Motor Authority site:
"Matte paintjobs used to be the choice of weekend racers who’d touch up their cars after a bingle with anything they could get their hands on to protect it from rust, but lately the shine-free surface has been making its way onto more tuner cars and now production models as well. One of the most notable examples is the stunning Lamborghini Reventon, which features a matte grey paint scheme similar to a jet-fighter.
"Last month’s Detroit Auto Show saw at least eight cars feature matte paintjobs, with Lamborghini once again using the finish, this time for its Gallardo Spyder. GM also had a couple of concept cars covered with matte paint as did Mercedes and Chrysler. Speaking with the Associated Press, Dupont Automotive color technology manager Karen Surcina told reporters matte finishes on specialty or limited-run vehicles would be available in the next two or three years.
"Carmakers like it because it shows off the pure design of a vehicle while also accentuating most of its lines but it can prove troublesome when it comes to repairs and maintenance. “Every time you take it through the car wash, the buffers are starting to buff it back up and it starts to get shiny there. It’s easy to paint, but it’s not easy to keep it matte,” Surcina explained. For customers, it’s simply a new way of differentiating their cars and it looks like it’s a trend that’s gaining popularity."
So for all of our resident detailers out there, what do you think about this trend? If a matte surface really helps to show off the design of a vehicle, how do you think a Crossfire would look with that kind of finish? And wouldn't it actually be harder to maintain? All views are appreciated. Thanks!
Shine-Free Matte Paint is the New Black

In certain cases I think matte paint looks pretty good - that Lambo Reventon would probably be hot no matter what color you did or did not paint it! I've seen some hot rods in various matte colors and they all looked pretty cool. My understanding though is that if you get a simple scratch in the paint you can't just polish it out like you do with a high gloss base coat/clear coat finish because you'll actually start to add gloss in the area you polish. Not necessarily a high gloss like most cars, but a higher level of gloss than the rest of the car. That would stand out like a sore thumb.
I'd give it some more time before comitting to it on the entire car. Certain accents would be cool though, like the two chevron style stripes that forum member former NXMX5 has HERE or racing stripes on other cars.

It would be easier to try on a black car than any other color!

best way to decide is to wait until a spring morning where is that mist of dew all over the car, well if its black... or guess any color but just walk around it and look. i love very simple cars using flat or cars with very sharp lines, i think the lines of our fenders would stand out enough to make this work but the hood grooves and the side strakes would have to go too round. just my opinion, which if you didnt know, is worth its weight in gold!
Beautiful cars; beautiful finish. Let us know if, when and how you get it done. But also check out this story from today's Winding Road, plus the comments too. Is that "our" "andrew" posting about detailing issues?
