Default License plate light replacing with LED

Hi,
My license plate lights are aging and are almost beyond possible to repair. There are no new sold anymore, but I found replacement LED lights that fit almost perfect, they are from Mercedes.

I have documentet it here with text and photos:

2005 years Chrysler Crossfire: License plate light

With LED light i maybe will last the car's lifetime.

It could be that all of you alreadu know about this but still maybe some help.

/Lars

The reason the original leases break is because people tighten the screws too much.
The LED replacements can be purchased from eBay, about $15/pair. CLICK
To remove them you slide them sideways against the springy piece of plastic and they then can be pried out or pushed out from behind just like the originals.
These have been used since JHM2K did a post on them on this forum in 2013.

Lars, do you have a link to the LED lamps you used?

I found that these lenses can crack because people keep slamming the trunks shut and the lenses (being on the hatch) take a beating every time. Lower the trunk slowly and then gently let it drop. This car's trunk has a wonderfully designed closure mechanism that seals perfectly and firmly with a click. There is no reason to be slamming the trunk shut on these cars. I have thought about replacing the stock bulbs with LED's though for the added night visibility they provide but have only thought about it as I'm not sure I want that much brightness on the back of the car based on some of the pics I've seen of others who replaced them.

I think you are wrong in your assumption, tighten those screws until they will go no more and they will crack.
It is a poor design and should only nip the seal not crush it.
I have the LED replacements but agree they do look a bit too bright.

Hi,

I bought mine at Amazone:

https://www.amazon.se/dp/B07B4CDDTR/...1_TE_item?th=1

But maybe better to use the link that was provided from onehundred80 at Ebay because they state it fit Crossfire:
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/283665156083...pid=5011458868

I don't understand why the link address has to be that long.

In Sweden they add taxes andcustomt duties, it was cheaper from Amazon for me with these included.

When I replaced my cracked lenses I was sure not to over-tighten... just seat them properly. But your assessment is interesting as an old retired guy from a Ford assembly plant who installed interior assemblies was told in his training to "screw it in until you hear a crack and then back it off 1/4 turn". Don't know if that was also taught in Germany but if it was that would explain a great deal. ; )

Get the LED replacements, they cost about the same as the lenses shown above.

I've replaced OEM license plate lights with LED units. Can't remember where I ordered them but they were complete LED light units that popped right into the frame hole that houses OEM light housing.
They are great, I would say approx 6500K light range and very bright.

I found that some of these eBay LED license plate lamps are too hard to insert and probably too hard to get out. I had a set and modified them by filing a notch in the housing so that they went in easily and can easily be removed just with your fingers, they are not going to fall out either.
I now have six of these sockets on the car, two each in the trunk, foot well and license plate. I have LED lights in the map light as well, I used the LED with the light on the end rather than the ones with the lights on the side, much brighter.
using LED bulbs in the trunk sockets is a waste of light as half the light is wasted behind the trunk liner.
