Whether you want to classify this (NHTSA makes Toyota modify seat latch recall — Autoblog) as a TSB or recall I don't really care. This is just a classic example of the way Toyota behaves, and it's inexcusable.

Funny, though, how we don't see news articles about TSBs for everyone else, just Toyota. And I know everybody has them. Plenty of them.
That is not a TSB... that is a Service Campaigns. A TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) is just a reference to help a technician diagnose and fix a concern. A Service Campaign is a free repair the manufacture sends notices to the vehicle owner telling them to bring the vehicle in for repair. TSB's are never sent to owners.

So it sounds like a "service campaign" is just a factorys way of getting the job done before a mandated recall is issued.
TSBs sound like corrections for issues that are not safety related.
Service Campaigns & NHTSA recalls are recalls just depends on if it was government or factory issued.

You can bet a "service campaign" is a clever way to avoid an inevitable official "recall" and the stigma that goes along with it.

So to say Toyota has not had numerous recalls is inaccurate - they just issue a campaign before a recall is issued. Calling back vehicles for repair of systems like faulty cruise controls, failing brakes, transfer cases that fail, and frames that rust out by any name is a recall. Nice try on their part to claim so few recalls - and that is all it is, clever marketing.

IMO.
BTW - I could really care less, I just dont like that this false info is used to make domestic carsappear to be of lesser quality. Buyer beware or aware.

The New York Times has an interesting article on this subject.

I agree with that statement but there are manufactures that wait till a problem is noticed by the NTHSA before they care. And there is no doubt in my mind that Toyota knew about this before LaHood made a big deal about it.

The latest vehicle cast into the spotlight is the 2010 model of Tacoma four-wheel drive pickups in the North American market, including 8,000 in the United States and 1,500 in Canada.
The voluntary recall was to inspect their front drive shafts, which may include a component that contains cracks that developed during the manufacturing process, the company said.

They are just rotatein vehicles lol.

TOKYO – Toyota is considering a recall of its hot-selling Corolla subcompact after complaints about power steering problems — another blow to the world's largest automaker already reeling from a string of recalls for safety troubles.

Yup....Im really regretting leaving my cushy job at Mercedes to take this Managers job at Toyota. I havnt seen a decent pay check in a few months. Toyota started building to many cars too quickly and the quality suffered. Oh well, live and learn i guess.
A0A recall = Accel pedal shim
A0B recall = Hybrid brake system flash
A0C recall = i dont remember lol
A0D recall = Matrix/Corolla power steering pump

so much for Toyota quailty.... 4 recalls in 2 months.

Putting quantity over quality has caught up with Toyota. I believe that once the smoke clears, they'll bounce back and be offering some great deals in the process.

While Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda sits answering questions on Capitol Hill, the FBI confirmed with us they raided the offices of three Toyota suppliers in Metro Detroit for documents related to antitrust violations and hiding of quality problems. The FBI just confirmed to us they raided the offices of Yazaki North America, Denso International and Tokai Rika (TRAM), as part of an ongoing probe into Toyota's 1.4 million unit recall, and a larger antitrust action confirmed by Toyota to MSNBC. This comes at the same time as Toyota Motor Corp. CEO Akio Toyoda takes the stand in Washington, DC and follows a report that the SEC was looking into the embattled automakers.

So basically while Toyoda was reporting to the Boards of GM and Chrysler the SS was raiding his house.

Toyota has know about issues for years and did everything they could to cover them up. Internal memos stating how much money was saved by doing so, hiring NHTSA people to fill the high paying roles of liaison to the NHTSA, etc all point to just how money grubbing and heartless this company has been.

I've never been a fan of Toyota for a whole bunch of reasons, and all this is just reinforcing my feelings. Though, admittedly, I didn't suspect them of this sort of stuff.

It's all of business today Mike. Or the vast majority of it anyway. There is so much fear because of the economic chaos, that it's just a matter of time before you see it. And the scary part is there is lots of folks internal to these companies that try to delicately say the truth yet cannot really be heard because of their own fear, and the egos above who, to be honest, have even bigger fears-and rightfully so. They have bigger houses and bigger cars, and the fact is they are NOT that much smarter than anybody else-they just have a better ability to buffalo than others. The have all these debts out there, their families are relying on them to provide it, and basically they will kill, literally sometimes, to keep it that way.

This article provides clarity as to what is going on in Washington: The Toyota Witch Hunt - BusinessWeek

I also find it very suspicious that with all the Toyotas in the world, this problem appears unique to Toyotas in the US.

On page one of the recall it says around 4.2 million toyotas and lexus vehicles have the cts gas pedal and on page 2 it says only 2.23 million of those vehicles are in the U.S. I bet the U.S. has alot higher of a standard then china and japan on trasportation safety. Thats why its such a...uhhh....problem for them here.

An out-of-control Toyota Prius was brought to a halt today in San Diego by a California Highway Patrol car putting itself in front of it like a brake. According to the CHP, the car suffered from a stuck accelerator. The driver of the runaway Toyota Prius called CHP while driving eastbound on Interstate 8 near San Diego around 1:30 PM PST, screaming about a stuck accelerator and being unable to shift the car into neutral. California Highway Patrol responded, putting a patrol car in front of the Prius, eventually stopping the car near La Posta Bridge. This high-profile incident comes on the same day Toyota made a similarly high-profile defense of its cars.
In response, Toyota has dispatched a technical specialist to investigate the problem. Toyota claims:
"[They] learned of a report that a California Highway Patrol (CHP) unit was dispatched in response to a 911 call from a motorist driving a Prius on Interstate 8 in San Diego County who said the accelerator pedal was stuck. The report states that the CHP unit slowed in front of the vehicle and acted as a brake to bring it to a stop. Toyota has dispatched a field technical specialist to San Diego to investigate the report and offer assistance."
