Default memories and dreams

there are 2 things that nobody can take away from you: your memories and your dreams
the way life was....
what i remember is that i was born in a city. we lived in an apartment downtown. there was electricity and running water, but no refrigerator. neither we had ice box, so we went to the corner store to buy whatever for everyday needs.
the milkman brought milk everyday. we left the empties and he replaced them, and collected the money everynow and then. there was no toilet paper, and that was another reason to buy the newspaper. we had no telephone, so whenever we needed to use it we went to the corner store. but we had radio, and we listened to the news once a day, and other programs with music and entertainment. in the evening just before dinner there was a program for children, with great songs that i still remember. people was nice, and they married before they lived together. and all went to mass. sometimes airplanes flew overhead and that was an exciting experience. school was at walking distance-almost everything, and in case we needed it, city bus was all that we needed. no trafic lights yet. movies sometimes, playing at the park nearby, sometimes to the zoo. that was all about. and all that we needed to be happy.

[QUOTE]but no refrigerator-still was not invented[/QUOTE
Guess that makes you 107 years old, our new SENIOR Crossfire member, since the first domestic electric refrigerator was in 1913

I remember all my parents friends lived within earshot. A bike got me to all of my friends within 3 minutes. We sat next to our milkman and mayor at Church and news of us misbehaving reached home before us. Our little league baseball uniforms were made locally at the Norwich Knitting Mill....they were wool, hot, and grass stains never seemed to wash out. The police would stop and pick us up off the street early in the morning, knowing we were alter boys going to serve 7AM Mass at ST. Paul’s Church. We were Boy Scouts and camped 12 months of the year in a lean to next to a pond just west of town. Teachers would let us out at 1PM on days of t(e World Series to see on TV where I saw Yogi Berra race up to Don Larson and gave him a bear hug with both his legs wrapped around him after his perfect game. Whitey Ford was our guest speaker at winter Banquet and I remember him driving up from NYC...charged us $50. Elvis Presley gyrating with Hound Dog on Ed Sullivan’s Show. Walking home from school and stopping to sit in an Isetta on dealers lot. The Ford convertible with the top that folded into the trunk held the Homecoming King and Queen on way to football field. We carried these small milk boxes around on Halloween collecting change for UNICEF. One of my best friends had polio. Life wasn’t very expensive back then, but i wouldn’t trade a million dollars for so many good memories.

Tough life, no toilet paper.
We had planes fly overhead and some of them dropped bombs on us.
Many fathers never did come home from the war.
I think someone lived in a dream.

Winston Churchill, oneeighty, was able to keep that dream alive. Maybe THE most important person of the 20th Century. Blood, Sweat, and Tears, where so few did for so many.

....... not that different, actually, from today’s Britain.

Well, my dad was born in 1912 on a farm in rural Michigan. No electricity until 1936. Dad talked about going to town once a month, they had a 'root cellar' and lived completely off the land as farmers.

Dad was born into a life of work, no phone/radio/engines, they used horse power to farm until the 30's.

He died in 1996 in a world of:
Computers in homes,
Phones is cars,
Cheap air travel,
Space travel,
Genetic engineering and nuclear energy.

Think of how life changed in my dad's lifetime from 1912 to 1996 - the world he died in was almost not reconcilable with the one he was born in.
He saw WWII (served at sea), he lived thru the entire cold war, watched men walk on the moon, and was fascinated that his 14 year old son (ME!) was able to talk to friend on the other side of the world with a $120 radio in his bedroom and a home built antenna in the trees outside.

He was my biggest fan.
(You didn't think i could make this tribute to dad turn into a post all about me, did you? )

once driving on a beautiful summer sunday i stopped for lunch at a small town. the houses were kept in good shape, all clean, people friendly. near the diner was a park with people having a picnic. benches on the grass, colorful umbrellas, kids playing with *****, balloons, a pond with swans, and the band playing on.
just like in the old movies. i had to stay there for a few minutes to soak into that atmosphere of happiness, that will carry with me forever .

from time to time i like to open the treasure chest of my memories and bring this wonderful dream-like scene back.
memories are made of this.

i recall watching Tommy Hunter shows. his songs, and at the end of every program, his readings, were treasures for me to recall since. am enclosing a video for those who were not acquainted.
1 of them was about a neighbor farmer that told him that the cow broke the rope and eat all the beans; the hogs got cholera and died; the bank denied a loan so will not be able to buy seeds for next season; the soil was so dry that you couldnt rise an umbrella on a sack of fertilizer; his wife was going to have a new baby, and his mother in law was moving in to stay.
then he added: but we are still living, so every thing is o k.
i have my own version: even if not everything is o k, we are still living.
think about that.

Worked in 'the ATL' from 2003 to 2007 in Midtown (17th & Peachtree St. NE). Rented an old house only 8 city blocks from work with a 2-car garage. (56 Alden Ave.)
