Default Hissing when locking / unlocking

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and I was hoping you could help me. My wife’s black 2004 Crossfire coupe has developed a strange fault and the dealer has been not very helpful. When you unlock the car with two presses of the keyfob you can hear a hissing air noise from the boot area outside of the car and it is even louder insider. It only lasts for around 5 seconds. Everything unlocks fine. When locking the car it takes around 30 seconds for the little shaft to slide across and lock the fuel cap. If you don’t hold the fuel cap in place until it locks then the shaft will miss it and the fuel cap will not be locked.

Our dealer charger over $1,000 to replace and fit a new pump which made no difference. Now they reckon this is something to do with the fuel cap (motor?) is causing the failure. The knowledgeable technician is off sick and we have no faith in them as they couldn’t solve a trim squeak and ended up putting the luggage cover hooks on upside down.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing the hissing issue?

Many thanks,
Chris

Cool Re: Hissing when locking / unlocking

Welcome to the Forum!!!

Definitely sounds like and air leak, crimped hose or possibly just a small hole in one of the lines.

Thanks for the feedback. You don't know where the hosing is located do you and/or how to get to it?

The hose is probably located between the plastic interior o=panel, and the outer trunk lid. You probably have to remove the interior trim panel. (I think there's pics on this forum somewhere).

The security control unit is located under the cargo panel in your trunk/hatch area on the right side. You can trace the air/vacuum lines from there. I would listen for the hissing and see if you can narrow down the location before you start pulling panels.

Hope that helps.

I'm not wanting to hijack the thread, but could someone help an XF newbie understand what air/hoses has to do with the lock/unlock function? I have a feeling I'm about to learn something new ...

The trunk locking mechanism is pneumatic.

There is a TSB for the repair of the air lines. If you locate the leak the dealer should fix it.

Only on the fuel cap, it takes around 30 seconds before the locking shaft does it's thing. It seems fast enough to lock just a looong time until it gets itself organized to do so. The doors from memory lock and unlock just as quick as before.
