How to replace door speaker cover?
How to replace door speaker cover?
OK, my driver's side door speaker cover was cracked, so I ordered a replacement. Now I can't get the cracked on off. I thought it would pop right out. Any suggestions?
Edit:
========================
Well, I finally got the speaker cover off. Thankfully I had a interior trim panel tool, like this one:
http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...h=tools&tp=990
It is well worth the money ($4.50) as it won't scratch your interior panels or parts. It slides easily between the cracks and usually the trim peice will pop out as you slide the tool under. If not a little gentle prying will opo the trim peice off. The tip of the tool gets chewed up, but that's because it is soft and won't harm your trim.
========================
Here's a step by step for those interested in removing the speaker cover:
You don't need to remove the whole door panel!
1) open the car door wide so you have lots of room to work
2) slide the tip of the trim panel tool between the inside edge of the silver ring that surrounds the speaker cover, and the mesh of the speaker cover. It won't go in far only a couple milimeters.
3) work the trim panel tool around the entire circumference of the silver ring, sliding it, and occasionally prying gently out.
4) the silver ring will pop out after a few times around with the trim tool. the watch word here is patience, since you don't want to break off any of the little clasps that hold it in place.
5) once the silver ring is removed, you'll be able to clearly see the around the edge of the mesh speaker cover, and you can see each of the clasps holding it in place
6) with the tip of the trim panel tool, press each clasp towards the center of the speaker and pull the mesh out a little, releasing the clasp. repeat that for each clasp - I think there's 4, maybe 5.
7) Now that the old one's are out, you can easily pop the new speaker mesh back into place. It only fits one way - where all of the clasps line up with the holes in the panel. So you can really screw it up. Just don't force it. If you have to force it, you don't have it lined up right, and might have it upside-down.
8) after the mesh is in place, pop the silver ring back in place. The silver ring has a slight curvature on one side, which follows the door panel's curve toward the front of the car. Put the curve towards the front and it will snap right in. If it doesn't snap right in, you've probablt got it backwards, turn it 180 degrees and snap it in.
Sorry, no pictures of the repair. My camera battery was dead.

Re: How to replace door speaker cover?
It should!
The speaker grills are held in place 4 four clips (for lack of a better description). You should be able to stick something behind them & pop them off. The 'clips' are at the 10, 2, 4 & 8 positions. Try something plastic & reasonably stiff, get it behind the cover & see if a little 'leaning' doesn't work.
Wierd, in the '04 Coupe I had one pop off all by itself.
Good luck, Tom!!

To take the grill off, you don't need to take apart the door panel.

2. There are 2 screws inside the silver handle, one behind the SRS badge, and one between the tweeter and the handle. Remove them carefully, mine were holding a little tension on them
2. Lift up on the door panel, and mind the lock plunger.
3. Corner triangle piece pulls out without screws.
I'm sure I'm forgetting something, it's been a month since I put mine back together.
Re: How to replace door speaker cover?
I had the day off, so I decided to tackle the speaker cover. I dug up my trim panel tools, and went to work. It was no problem with the right tools. I didn't need a screw driver, nor did I need to take the whole door panel off. I just had to take the silver ring surrounding the speaker mesh off. That was easy once I figured out to slide the trim tool between the ring and speaker mesh from the INSIDE of the ring, not the outside. Pop, pop, and it was off. Another pop or two and the mesh was off. Easy peasy.

You're missing quite a few screws
To take apart the door panel, read the crutchfield master sheet. It's posted here on the forums somewhere.. do a search.

Glad you got it squared away, Tom!!
