Lightbulb Making a Cargo Cover. How hard can it be?

Failing to find any cargo covers for sale, I am going to make one myself. As this is nothing more than a old fashioned window roller blind with a fancy price, how hard can it be? It certainly has to be cheaper, similar Mercedes parts are really pricey.

If I can find a black or dark grey blind of a suitable size I should be half way there. Some of these blinds come with valances, so that's what I want, so long as it is small enough in section. I am thinking that it can be fitted to the same mounting holes as the original Mopar part. Some of these old roller blinds had to be cut to size, if I cannot get one of the correct size I will have to do that.

The hardware that holds the pulled out end of the blind will be easy, the original Mopar parts were quite crude.

Now to find the correct blind to start with. I will post updates as I go along.

If anyone has one for sale, let me know.

I've read other posts that the cargo cover has been discontinued by Chrysler, so a lot of the web dealers may show the cargo cover but in a permanent "out of stock" status.

I have got one ordered finally, there are not many left at all. I phoned in an order and I am hoping it is actually on the shelf. I was assured that it was. Another dealer accepted the order and then cancelled it as he had none.

I also checked this site and they have none left.

I will still do the study on making one from scratch.

good luck! I am considering making one from scratch, so it can be a joint effort.

Hate to say this - but if you are looking to retro fit from a different model car you may want to check out one from a Mustang.....I know the "M" word. But they are readily available and cheap if you have to cut them up (maybe multiple times)
I have one out of a Mustang in the garage. I could compare it to the one out of the Crossfire. I also have one in my Magnum that I could check for size.

I have had two Mustangs, a '66 and a '73. Still have the '66, nothing but a basic model that my son says he wants to fix up.

The Crossfire rear cover is wider that that of a Magnum? Isn't the Magnum like a station wagon. That seems pretty wide.

I have a Camaro rear cover I'll check out it's size.

A good quality blind of this type should not be too hard to find. They come in lots of colors, they all seem to come in black and various other colors, dark grey would be nice. If the color that suits your wants is not available in a blind, then another material could be found and switched with the blind material.

1992 Camaro is 55" x 36". Now that I think of it, those are kinda hard to come by so might look elsewhere.
Does the stock CC mount on those two pins on the wall?

Ever seen pictures of a stock one?

I got to look at one at the Dragon. The cover does not use any of the pins that are already there. The cover must come with its own mounting hardware. At the time I didn't have may camera or you would see what I mean.

So does anyone have pictures? I don't recall seeing anything about the rear cover in the owners manual.
Does it really exist?

Crossfire - 44" wide, extends 27"
Magnum - 44" wide, extends 22"
Mustang - 51" wide, extends 27"

After looking at all three - the Mustang is the cheapest looking (by far) and works almost like a window shade.

When I first purchased my car, I wanted a cargo cover. Then my parts guys told me what they cost and he couldn't believe it either.

Then I realized that you would loose a lot of storage room if you only loaded your hatch area to the shade height. When we travel, the shade would be useless, when you need it most. My rear window was already dark tinted when we bought the car, and it is hard to see in there to begin with. I gave up on the cargo cover idea.

If you guys fabricate a cover, make it extra long so it can hump up over items (suitcases, travel bags, etc...) that you are traveling with.

Good luck, James
