New Steering Wheel
I have the two tone interior that includes the gray steering wheel and always thought a black sterring wheel would look good with this color combination. I searched for a black Crossfire wheel but could not find one. I did find a brand new in the box SLK steering wheel and air bag which is exactly the same size, matched the black on my dash and upper door panels perfectly. This was an easy mod and only took a few minutes to do. I also added the center emblem.

Looks Good Bob.
I have always disliked the cedar steeing wheel in my car. It puts too much of the color in the car.
This looks great and is simple?
I can handle simple.
So how much? Part Numbers?

I don't have part numbers as I found my new wheel and air bag on Ebay. Other MB wheels may work fine but I had a feeling the the SLK R170 would be a direct swap like most any SLK part on a Crossfire. The R170 came with two different wheels. Mine is the latter. The MB color is Anthricite. I have notice the MB wheel has a nicer softer feel. I was hoping to change the center emblem with Crossfire emblem but the guy who made the badges on my car said it would be too expensive for a one off emblem. Prices are what ever you find on Ebay.

1. disconect the battery
2. remove two rear screws that hold on the air bag (allen wrench)
3. lift off air bag and unplug it.
4. remove the center large Allen bolt and the wheel will come right off. make sure your wheel is centered before removing.
Put new wheel on in the same position, and then revers the above to put back together. I had this done in about 15-20 minutes.
MisterTazz put a MB steering wheel on his car after the V8 swap.
He also has controls on his for the cruise and radio etc.
Rudy was in the process of hooking up the controls when I last heard.
Don't think he ever posted any pics but I saw it when he came to a car show I was at.

I guess because of the airbag I would never had imagined it would be that easy.
Thanks again.

I looked at the steering wheels with the extra bottons and controls and paddle shift but didn't feel up to adding all the wiring and programing.

And I think it actually matches the darker dash color in all the Crossfire versions. Near the end of the model run, Chrysler picked up on this. I've seen several 2008 Dark Slate Gray/Cool Vanilla interiors where the steering wheel was the Dark Slate Gray version.
Really nice mod! Compliments the car very well! This may be a stupid question but here goes - Is the center (horn/airbag) cover included with these steering wheels? Looking at the wheels on ebay, I notice the covers are missing. Are they included or something you need to buy separately? Thanks..

Bringing up a dead thread, but I need some help. I scored an ultra-rare wheel from overseas (more details later), and Steve and I had a bear of a time trying to get the Allen bolts (yes, the very first step) off the back.
We were using a 4mm Allen, and with the long side inserted behind the wheel, we couldn't get enough leverage on the bolt to break it loose. Even tried gripping the Allen with a crescent wrench, and the bolts were so tight that the wrench was starting to bend (!!!).
Rudy suggested a metric T-handle wrench to get the job done. Metric, we did not have. Went to Sears and second-guessed ourselves, thinking that the T-handle might not have enough "oomph" to break the bolts loose. So we walked away empty handed.
Are we missing an extremely obvious detail, like turning the bolts the wrong way? I can't imagine the tiny little screws behind the airbag requiring 80ft/lbs of torque to break loose. If you're looking at the wheel from the rear, we were trying to turn the bolts to the left (counterclockwise) to break them loose. They wouldn't budge.
Needless to say, we didn't get too far and called it a day.
While we're asking, what size nut is the center of the wheel held on with?
Thanks Bob,
