Default Rear View Mirror Problem

Hi all,

I recently was getting in my car to head to another day of work, excited to drive my crossfire, when i looked up to see condensation on the rear view mirror. It was over 100 degrees that day (south alabama for you) and so this didn't make sense. Upon further inspection, it seems that my rear view mirror (auto dimming, '04 model) has broken. it has what seems to be a liquid in between two panes of glass, and where the liquid is sitting, the mirror looks normal. However, the top half of the mirror has no liquid, only fog, and it's unusable. Thanks to the tiny back window, and relatively no visibility while backing up anyway, it really hasn't hindered my driving, because i can use the lower half of the mirror to back up. However, i would like to fix it, if at all possible.

I went to the service manual and of course it said the WHOLE assy has to be replaced to fix it, and from what i read elsewhere, this is true with auto dimming mirrors. i have no problem buying a replacement, re-installation seems like it should be a breeze (i hope).

The problem is that i can't seem to find the mirror anywhere online. the parts catalogue lists the part number:

05099961AA

but a google search, and a Mercedes online parts catalogue search does not return anything for this part number. So i guess the question is two fold;

1) is the mirror replaceable, and where can it be bought from?

2) Can the mirror be replaced with ANY mirror, or is the mounting specific to the Crossfire?

Hopefully my searches through the forum were thorough, i couldn't find another thread that could answer this question. Also, pardon my lack of preparation/knowledge, i'm in college with a part time job, and this is low on the priority list.

Thanks in Advance!

Timothy

Yes check e-bay they do sell them from $30.00 to a $100.00 or so, I got a (auto dim style) 04 for my 05 from e-bay, and the mounts were the same for the windshield button, you can also try searching your locall auto recyclers (junk yards) there are a lot more getting totaled out now days and used parts are getting a little easier to come by. Good luck towards getting it fixed.

I have been watching eBay for months looking for the auto mirror. Only one I found had same mirror. I have been unable to locate non MB mirror with same mount. After marked mirrors are 10 to 11 inches wide- way too big for me. I did find one at a MB dealer for $199.

You have to watch e-bay every day if you really are looking for something, there was 3-4 listings within the last 4 months for a 04 auto dim mirror, and I'm suprised bluecoupe's did not sell.

that was good price, and just what i need, but it says the listing is now removed. (even though i can still view it?) so i may just go with another, more generic mirror, even though i really like the simple classy look of the 04 crossfire rear view.

i was thinking something like the base model shown here....

Auto Dimming Mirrors - AutoDimming Rearview Mirrors - AutoSport Catalog

any suggestions, or more links? i wish that ebay listing was still available, i would have bought it in a heartbeat!

Thanks all for the help.

Gentex (Mito) makes a few. They seem to be smaller. And a little less expensive:

Amazon.com: Gentex GENK2a auto dimming mirror: Automotive

Gentex Auto-dimming Mirrors from MITO Corporation Excellence in Electronics for Auto, Car, Truck, SUV, RV and Boats
