There is a thread for removing all of the dash/console parts in the Sticky section.
The ashtray is a real PITA to remove even when all else is removed. Once you have it in your hot little hands, you'll see the problem.

Give yourself a day to do it.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news . . . I've had the ashtray mechanism apart before. If the ashtray won't stay closed it's because a little plastic pendulum type part inside has broken.

Unfortunately, the mechanism is not repairable unless you can come up with a replacement pendulum piece. I've had to buy complete new ashtrays (actually bought the whole lower section of the center stack as pictured which included a working ashtray mechanism) and just replaced that whole section.

That's weird. Mine did this and a little part had shifted.

I'm wrong? That makes twice!

Dammit!!

The last time you thought you were wrong was the time you thought you had made a mistake, but as it turned out you were right, so that time did not count.
So unless you made a mistake this time, you are still batting 100.

Never say never, glues, epoxies and fiber glass can fix just about anything.

I came up with my own little fix for the ash tray issue. The video is taking forever to load to YouTube, once it does I will link.

Maxchicon is right, usually it isn't broken, it's just that the cover over the spring thing is loose. It is easier to get the ashtray out if you remove the front of it first. Just push the pivot pin from the passenger side with an awl then pull the pin out with a small plier.

I'll be anxious to see these "fixes" . . . Never too old or too smart to learn something new . . .

EDIT: 9:30 PM . . . WOW that you tube video is STILL loading?? 14 hours after I placed this post and I'm still waiting . . .

EDIT: 7:30 pm on 06/04 . . . 36 hours after my post. Still no you tube video link from Turboomni08
JEFASOLD I have to respectfully disagree with you . . . I don't see how the ashtray failing to lock closed can be related to that cover that goes over the spring.

If someone can actually show how to fix this issue without replacing that pendulum part, I'm ready and waiting to learn . . .

I would like pictures of how to remove this, every thread I see says pictures are not there or disappeared. This is driving me nuts. Also has any one hydra dipped the center console? And the bezel around the radio HVAC controls and switches, etc.

Seriously it was nuts how long it took to load. Failed three times! Sorry I kept you waiting.

Its not a true "fix" but it is a modification I guess that works pretty well. If you had one with a stronger magnet on it you could retain the spring open feature but this works really well for no more than I use the thing.

Step one is remove the silver part of the dash panel, which is remove the radio and remove the two screws above the radio and pop it out with a trim stick. This is all the rest they tell you below. Step four is unplug the light after you take it out...apparently you don't have to unplug the airbag light or the cig lighter because they are not mentioned, lol. (sarcasm at their bad directions, of course you need to unplug them.)

Hi Turboomni08, That's a nicely done modification. Thanks for posting the information and the you tube video!
