Can someone tell me how to mount the ash tray light bulb and connector, unless something is missing I am just not seeing how this can happen with what I have to work with?

There is a square hole that the light pushes down into. See how the wires have a sharp bend in them. Turn the bulb down. On mine (04 limited) there are 2 little glass rods ,that illuminate from the bulb, that run along the right side of the tray. The hole is at the end of the assembly on the right side ,at the back of the tray.

That's a totally different set up than mine. Mine is quite comical , when you see how it works. Next time I remove it I'll post a picture. When you see it , you go "huh".

While your there, will you do something for me? Put it in place , then see if you can reach in where you pulled the radio out , just to see if you can replace the bulb from there. I can do it on mine, I just want to see if that how it's designed for all.

Ooops,

wrong square hole, it fit perfectly but I can't see any purpose when I put 12v to the car

with light switch on the bulb kights up but is not seen in the tray

the only opening to the tray is in the center of this photo, but it is small and rectangular, those plastic posts almost look like a housing plugs into them?

I'm thinking that previous dealership busy fingers lost or broke something while in there when owned by another.

Sure, I will be happy to check that out for you if i get it right and reinstalled in the console.

am i posting in the right forum?

i expected some feedback on this one, ummm

Thanks

I pulled what appeared to be a cover off of the square box that i was plugged into last night, wow like you say Steve, crazy stuff. It reminds me of some of the german stuff i used to run into on the many S class cars i used to have over the years.
anyway, i plugged the bulb back into that square hole in the back and turned the lights on, yep that clear plastic tubing was lit up as well but i couldn't see any light in the tray or for that matter anywhere but at that clear plastic tubing and at the bulb, lol
opening and closing the ashtray didn't seem to give that clear tubing a purpose in life, haha. I imagine the truth will come to me about this situation someday, but for now I'll plug the bulb into that square hole, upper right rear and maybe someone else can tell me about this one, lol

You have it right. It is like mine, your first pics looked different. The small insert_(removable tray), has a small square window. If a smoker has had the car it my be covered over with residue. The lighting system leaves much to be desired. Once you put it all back together , you'll see more light Thur the cracks in the console than in the ashtray receiver.

Yepp, no problem to pull that bulb out and replace, through the radio opening. make sure the tabs on the connector face left to right looking at the console and shown in the pic. My finger is sticking in that square mounting hole for the bulb with my arm through the radio opening.

Has anyone found and LED bulb that would fit in the ash tray? That's the only light inside my cabin that is not an LED. Just curious if there are any.

A T2 wedge led has been mentioned a few times, on the forum. I have not tried it. Hope this is what your looking for. And if it is a good replacement, report back and let us know if it's a good option.

T2? I've only heard of a T10 or T5 bulb

I have seen mine in a dark car at night, not a lot of light there just seems to be one of those things that could have been designed better especially since a lot of light 'spills' out of every crack around it. Just my $0.02 cents worth!

.

Your $0.02 is worth $0.10 of some people's ideas.
Another light that loses most if its light is the trunk light in the coupe, with no reflector behind the bulb the area between the trunk lining and the rear fender must be lit up like Times Square by comparison.
I replaced the OEM light with one of the LED lights that some people fit when replacing the rear licence plate lights, in fact I added another one the other side. The LED lights pop right in and fit great.
SHOW TIME!

My bulb says on it ;
OS n3U,
12/1.2

This is 12 volt, 1.2 watt.
It is the same size as bulb #286, a wedge bulb, mini base.
The LED bulb appears to be
a #T5-286
