New England Car Taxes
New England Car Taxes
I'm not sure where else in the US that cars are subject to property tax. I am curious as to how much different towns are stroking us for.
'05 Roadster LTD Norwich CT $547 per year. How bad are others being soaked? Last year I paid $70 less on the same car...thank you subprime mortgage thieves

Re: New England Car Taxes
In Massachusetts we have an excise tax on cars. The money goes to the town where you claim to reside. The tax is reduced substantially by the model year of your car. They value the cars much lower than they are actually worth on the retail market. It use to be $25 per $1000 of assessed value. A 2005 model would be assessed at approximately 60% of it's value. They don't take into consideration the value of a classic car. They just do depreciation from original retail pricing. Once a vehicle is five years old you are basically paying a minimum tax. Maybe one of my fellow Massachusetts residents can be more specific on the percentages and actual assessed fees.

Well now, this is a new one! I've never heard of this before. Are you guys kidding?! You have to essentially pay a "property tax" on your cars?!
Jeez, any way to swipe a few more bucks out of your pockets......
Up here in Boonyland you pay only the annual license renewal fee ($75) & of course, the tax when you purchase the car.
Man, I hope any of our state politicians don't belong to this forum!

I do believe you have the right formula, Reno. Buying a left-over or slightly used car makes your excise tax cheaper as compared to purchasing the current model year.
I purchased my XFire in February of this year with 6000 miles on it. It's like new and already it's three years old. That's fine with me because no one knows what model years these cars are unless they have been told. All of them look alike.

You should live in Fairfax County Virginia. I just received my personal property tax bill for my 2008 limited roadster and it is $800 based on a used car value of $37K in January 2008. I tried explaining that I paid only $29K new in February but they would not budge, what a local government rip off.
