Default Is anyone interested in Autocross?

Hello,

Does anyone participate in autocrossing??? If so, do you do SCCA or NASA? Where are the events? I watched an event years ago in Frederick, MD. It looked like much fun but it was packed. So, I joined the local Mercedes Benz club (http://www.gws-mbca.org/) which has over 8 events a year. It looks as if this club is more informal. My first event is on Sunday so I will let you know more next week.

O4Fire,

Not surprisingly my autocross event was rained out on Sunday. The next event is in late May. Also, they have what appears to be a nicely run and low key performance driving school. I am enrolled in that as well.

This local MB club seems to be a good deal for us. Here is the event schedule: http://www.gws-mbca.org/events.html

Arado,

Sunbeam Tiger or Alpine? Both great cars.

I doubt my Crossfire would keep up with you in an autocross!

Great! I'll see if I can fit something into my schedule.

04Fire,

I should be at most of the autocross events so let me know if you are planning on going. Also, there is a cool driver performance class on 5/21/2007 for GWS members. Membership is $35 and the event is $175 for an entire day. Summit Point Raceway is a lot of fun to drive. This class is limited participants and lower key than other clubs so risk should be minimal.

NovaTim...if you have any interest or knowledge about Summit points fun drives that would be great to share. We've had a few people express interesting in that for their XF's. Being in West Virginia, we might be able to pull in a pretty good audience from the surrounding states...maybe even those Long Island guys (hehe Tony).

Sennaspirit,

I think NASA and SCCA both have "fun runs". I have participated in 3 last year during NASA events. Their "fun run" is usually run Saturday and Sunday just before lunch. It requires a $20 donation and they will escort around the Summit Point Raceway main circuit. On two events it was 15 minutes but the last one we ran for 25 minutes. I was drained! Now, they do not let you go very fast on the long straight and you can not pass but they do not slow down much in the turns which makes it fun. My son was driving his WRX and he smoked me in my A4. This year I think he is going to find that the Crossfire handles too well and he will get smoked.

That answer your question?

hehe Yes...well almost...when do we do it?

That sounds great, i'm definitely up for that. Can you find out when the next few are so perhaps we can coordinate? Send me a private note if you want to discuss.

I was able to take my Crossfire on my first autocross event with the local MB club. I was happy since my Crossfire did better than I was expecting. Here is the details.

We had about 20 cars. There was an old 1964 MB with a great driver, E55 AMG, 1 SL600, Porsche Cayman and various other MB models. Some were experienced and some were not. I was more than a little nervous since I was staged between the Porsche and AMG cars. Thankfully it is a low key event and after a couple runs I was really impressed with my Crossfire. The torque, handling and good brakes was perfect for this tight and technical course. But, after about the 5th run I really started to notice how poorly my Contis all-season tires are on a skidpad. Of course most of the other cars were on sticky tires. I guess I need to get another set of rims quickly!

As it turned out a NASA instructor with a slightly modified S2000 won the event in 29.00 seconds. Porsche(also an instructor) Cayman was second at 30:13. My first run was 35:20. After 5 runs I turned off the ESP and my times improved each lap to 32.20. Not too shabby for a rookie. That was a better time than the E55 and SL600!

This local club is small but it seems a good group of guys and they understand our cars have a heart of a MB. Their knowledge and experience with MB products is impressive.

I will be organizing a fun run so look for details in another thread.

Great going NovaT!
Show those big kids what you got! Soon you'll be out there ripping out your seats, putting big wings on your car and end up like Dereck! (HDDP) That's not a bad thing.

WELL, I'm still interested int the summit point get together if we can make that happen...Let me next time you go to an autocross, would love to see/maybe participate.

Senna

Senna,

I will be at their next event which is 5/27/07. It takes place in Winchester, VA at a school right off Rt 7. Very easy to find. It is a tight, technical track but fun. More information can be found at http://www.gws-mbca.org/ax/autocross.html .

Let me know if you are interested.
