So I have been debating on adding another convertbile to the stable.
A few things it must have:
1. A back seat (bummer, or I'd buy another Crossfire ).
2. Decent reliability.
3. Decent power.
4. Decent safety.
5. Must be a used car.
6. No high mileage, I would say 75k+, unless it is an older car, say pre 1980s.
7. Priced at 13k or less.
8. Be in good or great shape.

Age, brand, etc. matters not.

Some I have thought about learning more about:
1. PT Cruiser GT Convertible
2. 90s BMW 3 series
3. First gen Camry Solara
4. 93 - 02 Mustang GT
5. VW New Beetle Turbo
6. Early 2000s Mitsubishi Eclipse V6, though I always liked the older turbo ones better.

So, I welcome your opinions and additions to the list of what I should consider.

I would go with the Solara and then maybe the Mustang. I've always liked the Solara, it has the look of a classy car. The Mustang as a second because you may find yourself wanting to drive it more than the XF.

 

The additional convertible would get driven a lot more than the SRT6. I only take it out on nice days, which in my neck of the woods, seem to be few and far between .
Curious - why do you think I would want to drive an older Mustang GT convertible more than the Crossfire? It would be nice to have a V8 though.
I figured a lot of folks on here would say go for the PT GT.

 

With safety in mind, how about a 1st gen Volvo C70?

 

That was going to be my suggestion. Good choice.

 

Some I have thought about learning more about:
1. PT Cruiser GT Convertible If you can overlook the styling they're great cars - I just think the ragtop version of the PT looks a bit odd. I love my PT Turbo although it's not a convertible, and I've had ZERO problems in 5 years of ownership since new. Runs low 14s in the 1/4 mile with the Stage 1 upgrade too.
2. 90s BMW 3 series This would be my first choice, hands down. Great car all around.
3. First gen Camry Solara In my opinion, one of the ugliest cars on the road today, plus I just basically hate Toyotas
4. 93 - 02 Mustang GT I can't decide if I like these or not. Every now and then I come across one that catches my eye, but they just pale compared to the '05-'09 cars. Still, it meets your criteria and would be high on this list in my mind. The fact that it's one of only two RWD cars on this list is a major point for me.
5. VW New Beetle Turbo Yikes! Really? You'd drive one of these? I can't get past the styling even after a case of beer and a fifth of vodka. If you can't drink something/someone pretty, then it must be fatally ugly
6. Early 2000s Mitsubishi Eclipse V6, though I always liked the older turbo ones better. Nice little ride, no doubt about it, but do you want a car that merely has a back seat, or one that has a useable back seat? There is a huge difference, and the back seat in these is nothing more than an upholstered parcel shelf with seat belts.


Of course, all the above are merely my opinions and certainly not intended to offend anyone.

 

The convertible version of the Solara suffers from copious amounts of cowl shake, The body flex will drive you nuts.
Mustang would be better.
The Volvo is a good choice, Or maybe A Saab 9.3

 

LOL. Yeah, really.
Here is how this all started: I have thought about getting another sort of convertible to drive alot during the nice weather, take on road trips, etc. My wife has always wanted an old VW bug convertible. A few years ago I found a beautiful '79 triple white convertible and took it for a test drive. Needless to say, my size 14 feet and the three tiny VW pedals did not get along. Makes for a short and eventful test drive when you hit the gas, but you also hit the brake and clutch.
Anyway, near my house is a 1968 Fiat 850 Spider for sale that I stopped and looked at. My wife said something about getting another convertible, but it would have to have a back seat, mostly for our dogs, but for other folks too. So begins my journey.
I'll do some research on the first gen Volvo C70 (I have a friend who had one), late model Saab 9-3s, etc.

I'd have to agree with Mike and say YIKES! on the new beetle. As a female, I'd never actually own one in fear of people not taking me seriously after that, and I think any woman who would make their husband drive in that thing is very selfish. haha. Hopefully she doesn't want baby blue or bubblegum pink?

Definitely check out the Volvo...a lot less "girly." I'll never forget the new baby blue beetle (convertible) I pulled up to last December. It had 4 men in it, and the license plate said "4FAIRYS." -- No, I'm not kidding. I was a little bummed that I didn't hear Cher blasting from the speakers. That would've made the moment priceless.

I have a 94 GT Vert for sale

All forged 347 Stroked and supercharged 350 hp 400ftlbs torque. This is on a de-tune. Car was just to aggressive to drive daily so had to tune it down a little but you can crank this baby past 500+ hp easily!!

Black on Black convertible brand new top havent let top down yet.

Yeah, think of the possibilities - 2001 Accord Sedan Convertible, 2008 Challenger SRT8 Convertible .

Well, after some further research, the Saab is out. The reliability/service costs seem to be enough to frighten me away. Not sure that the C70 is our cup of tea just yet. The Solara is out, wife is not a fan.
Plus I guess she would like to have something newer than 2002 or so.

Have you thought about a Sebring? I have a '97, I have never had any major problem with it. I would have bought another until I found out I could buy a Crossfire for the same price.

 

until the XF, my convertable was always, always a Jeep...a go anywhere convertable...

 

Update -
At this point, it seems to be down to a PT GT vert or a Beetle vert with the turbo (pre '06) or the 5 cylinder ('06 and after).

KcKey12 kindly loaned me his PT GT vert for the weekend so that we can get a feel for it. So far, I really like it. Now I will see what the wife thinks when she gets in from out of town this evening.

I would strongly consider a 96-98 M3 vert.

They are excellent cars, run forever, the only downside is that they are a little pricey to work on. For for its time, one of the best handling cars on the road and a peppy 240HP inline 6....
