I thought they had already put the kabosh on this idea because Pontiac was going the way of the dodo bird... I'll be interested to see if they come through with anything... even if it is listed as a Chevrolet TransAm

P.S. That things looks great....now if only they can find a way to remove about 1000lbs from the car and make it a beast.

 

Huh? They killed the Firebird along with Pontiac. Awesome Trans Am though!

 

I'm a big fan of Firebirds and Trans Ams I'm the original owner of an 82. It looks great to bad it will probably never happen being that Pontiac is done.

 

Someone or some company purchased 10 or so chassis from GM and had them VIN'd as Firebirds before GM puled the plug on the Pontiac name so there is a pretty good chance this is one of those cars. Have to admit this car looks pretty BA but the photos make it tough to see all the lines in the back and how it all comes together... D*mn black paint. LOL

Actually the louvers craze started in the mid 60's with the Lamborghini Miura (66-72) I believe. Then the Boss 302 Mustang in 69.
Probably 30 or 40% of all the 1st. edition Datsun Z cars used em. Chrysler even offered them on the 70's Cuda and Challenger, later on the Volare' Road Runner.
In the late 70's AMC used them on the 77 Hornet AMX, 78 Concord AMX, and in 79 and 80 on the Spirit AMX.
As far as I know, I don't think GM ever offered louvers (from the factory) for the Trans Am though.
I'm sure Tony (Acrispy1) can verify.

 

Correct. I had a '78 Z28. The louvers were only offered as after market. I got them to protect the rear seats from fading. The louver's black paint sure didn't hold up to the Texas sun very well though. But at least they protected the seats and helped keep the heat out.

It's too bad we didn't have UV window tint back then.

 

I don't care for the new camaro having owned a few of the old ones, but I do like that Trans Am look...the black one of course

 

Thanks Inferno. I traveled to California in 1978 in my friends 1975 280Z. (with no AC) and I remember quite well how effecient those louvers were at keeping the interior temps down. (even with vinyl seats)
As a matter of fact, he still has them on his car today. (But he did break down and have factory air installed not long after we got back from Calif.)

 

 

I didnt like the look of louvers on cars but recently saw an 2003 white Mach 1 with louvers and I must say they really complimented the look of the car!

 

Correct Mike GM never made factory louvers for the Trans Am, I have a 3 piece lovers on my car made by Shadow.
