according to the e/c group that was there the crosswinds and headwinds were brutal yesterday at the mile. some feel the chute was pulled to his side by a big gust and dragged him off the track. im wondering if the ins. company will pay for his car? he is racing after all, would really suck if he has to eat the cost of the car!

I read that the driver did 250.1 in the spring. I guess the theory is that the wind grabbed the chute & yanked the car all around. I don't know very much about deploying a chute to stop a car .... is that an actual danger you would need to be aware of, a freak thing, or a crapola excuse to cover something else up?

Maybe I can help a little.

The driver was Richard Holt in his Lambo Gallardo Twin Turbo built by Underground racing. This car holds the Texas mile record @250mph reached in march this year. Back then it had around 1200hp, I think.
Here is a video of his pass from last time:

For some reason my computer does not show me the player so here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afh9gsV9tV4

This time the car put out 1700hp to the wheels! Here is a pic of the dyno too proof that I am not talking bs .

Well supposedly he deployed the brake shoot and got caught in bad crosswind leading the car to lift and fly 20ft into the air.

The driver walked away and is healthy.

Unless he has a special policy on the car a normal auto insurance policy excludes any kind of racing mishaps.

Without a scratch?

Jake/Jerry had said that lifeflight was called in...

...on the lighter side, Jake's E55 did 180.5mph as his fastest last I heard. Pretty impressive.

I watched that entire video thinking I was going to see him fly, but I am disappointed.

I'm shocked that a Texas Mile event, with hundreds of amateur cameramen on hand, that no one has a clip of the car flying.

But if I were to bust my @ss in Wal-Mart, it would be a Youtube sensation.

I'm sure they are out there but out of respect, they have not been posted. I know I'd be mildly upset if my pride and joy was destroyed and people could just push play and watch it over and over and gawk if you will at my painful experience. Just my 2¢. I'm just glad the driver made it out alright. I've had good friends die in accidents that don't look much worse than a fender bender so you never know when, where or how your time will come but the man upstairs wasn't ready for this fellow yet.

I agree with being mildly upset, but I'm simply surprised that somebody, somewhere hasn't posted the video. That's all I was saying. It's honorable that folks are taking a "moment of silence", but people these days seldom extend a similar level of respect in a church, much less a race track. I mean, a beheading in Afghanistan went viral years ago... and that's a human life, not a chunk of metal. Also, it's not as if pictures haven't already been posted showing the car in midair. So, the blush is off the rose, so to speak.

It goes without saying that everyone is ecstatic that he's alive and relatively unharmed. Only the worst of people would wish any harm on a fellow motorsport enthusiast.

How many times have we seen footage of Space Shuttle Columbia explode? That's my point.

You guys need to read the interwebs more and improve your google-fu.

I present to you, a MUCH better video of the horrific crash.

You're welcome.

You're welcome.
I have seen many a dragster do that...the chute actually yanks the rear end off the pavement, and if a crosswind gets under there, well, you see the results....

I'm surprised that he thought he needed a chute. That thing has massive brakes. How big is the shut down run for that track?

I would like you guys to run that video, and stop frame it as I did, and tell me what you see....and I know I wasn't there, but watch it in slow, stop frame motion....and he sure wasn't at 200 either...

Searching youtube for "twin turbo gallardo" you'll find that same guy (same car too) in a nicely done video documenting his attempt at 240 with no prior experience . When you watch the vids you see him spin out almost every time when he's done with the run so I'm sure the guys is still new to driving that fast. Not saying I could do better (give me a car that could do 240 and I'd be more than happy to try though!) Just my opinion anyway...

1/2 mile shutdown before you run out of pavement...so probably less than that realistically.
