Default Raced A...

Yesterday evening on my way to the mountains for an enjoyable drive, I was passing a volvo S60, and as I got beside him coming around him, he floored it, I was like sweet, Im gona bust this guys ***.....wrong....He stayed right with me all the way to 135mph. I slowed down and let him pass, got behind him, thats when I looked at the right side of the trunk and it said "R" !

so the S-60R is a fairly quick car, but only on top end, I pulled from him until about 100mph then he started catching up, I guess thats where his turbo helped out.

Regular black base coupe 06 model, with 6-spd. At the time I was running basically straight pipes, but now that problem is fixed. But it was a great race.

Just read up on those cars, the volvo s60R has 300hp and 295ftlbs with a 0-60 of 5.5

Yes haha, he was racing, it was from about a 60mph roll to about 135-140. I think they do a bit better than 6.8

My car is a base model, which weighs less, and i have 6-spd anyway

Plus, like i said, i was running straight pipes= more hp

And if you can only get 6.8, youd better work on that footwork and get it down a bit better.

6.8 is what proffesional drivers that tested it ran, and base models are not that much lighter, strait pipes won't give you much of a hp increase either. oh ya mines a 6 speed also

oh wait sorry your correct, at sea level you should be able to pull off better than a 6.8, that was for the automatic.

I dont know the exact time, but I know its faster than 6.8

I think here in the mountains our air is thinner, it helps alot more than you would think, especially on turbo cars.

The straight pipes helps some, I would guess 5-7 hp. Maybe more since Im here in the mountains.

Thinner air (higher elevations) are actually detrimental to making horsepower.

you want denser air for making better horsepower......the more oxygen you can pack into a cylinder, the more fuel you can use, thus giving a bigger bang.

Voyager, are you serious with your avatar or is that a piece of sarcasm? From what I see in this forum including me, is that we would rather know what the devil might be interested in driving.

Apkano is correct, in the thin mountain air the turbo should eat you alive !

Just my Dos Centavos !

I was the one who quoted that the turbo cars pull harder with thinner air.

Elevation in feet: 3333
BHP at Sea Level: 215
Brake Horsepower Loss: 214.9785

The turbo is setup to provide boost up to wastegate pressures. BUT the amount of boost is determined by the speed of the impellor ( driven by exhaust gas speed ) and the wastegate control.
So turbos take longer to get the boost going and don't initially increase power at the same rate as at ground level. ONCE the turbo is spinning fast enough and producing enough boost for the wastegate to want to bleed some off THEN it is at the same power as sea level. So at higher alts they tend to be more laggy and more peaky.
BUT with MODERN ECUs this often re-maps and shifts the wastegate actuator electornically as opposed to earluer/cheaper mechanical

on n/a modern ECUs can alleviate the problem of altitidude reduction in O2 but not remove it completely. So todays cars are a LOT better than older gen

Everything you say is true to a point, depends on waste gate setting and the type/size of the compressor and turbine wheels. Still even with the lag time to spin up the turbine, the Volvo should have easily pulled away.

Just my Dos Centavos !

These Stats are from MotorWeek: The Xfire is not that much slower..

volvo 1/4 mile
14.4 seconds @ 100 mph
S60R

xfire non sc1/4 mile
14.8 seconds @ 97 mph

are you positive the 6.4 second 0-60 is a manual, or was that for the auto??

Available transmissions are our test car's 5-speed automatic with Chrysler's AutoStick manual shift mode, or a 6-speed manual. Hit the gas, and the Crossfire sprints to 60 in only 6.3 seconds. The 1/4 mile passes in a quickened 14.8 seconds, at 97 miles-per-hour. Those times are comparable to the last SLK320 we tested.

That was directly from autoweek article regaurding the test of an 04 crossfire
