Intel Track Day
For all you movie fans, Intel (the computer people) had a NASCAR track training day at the Irwindale Speedway in SoCal for some of the biggest CGI move/TV houses. We had artists from Sony, Warner Bros, NBC, Rhythm & Hues, Centropolis, Digital Domain, Pacific Title and others all to learn how to drive NASCAR stockers on a short oval. If some of these names don't sound familiar, stay for the credits for Ironman, The Hulk, Indiana Jones, Speed Racer, The Golden Compass etc. etc. etc.
That is one of Intel's Sales Engineers resting on the hood.
We got them all ready to go with another one of our customers racing simulators http://cxcsimulations.com/
This little puppy will set you back a cool $40K and is awesome. Three large 42" plasmas and a robotic Recaro that will jar your fillings loose with its realistic motions. You can set up nearly any track in the US. The company laser scanned the track and surrounding surfaces so fine that you can literally feel a pebble on the track. One of the Speedway's pro driving instructors decided to show everyone how it was done. It is a good thing he had his 4 point harness buckled because he got to experience what it is like to cause and be caught in a multi car high speed collision. He gave it too much throttle going into a turn and discovered the flying car and lots of oversteer. Whe he stopped spinning he was sitting sideways in the middle of the track midway through the turn. Suddenly the entire string of cars started bouncing him all over the track. He looked like a rag doll being thrown around. His sunglasses actually flew off his face and landed on the floor about 20 feet away. Now that is realism.
If any of you have ever flown a computer flight simulator, you know it can be easy to take off and fly but a real female dog to land. It has been claimed that if you can master the simulator, flying (and landing) a real plane can be a piece of cake. One of the mfg of these full size simulators is another one of our customers in SLC, Utah. Looks like that may hold true for the race simulator as well. BTW I am an application engineer at Intel. I love my job!
