Default Intake / Injectors / Manifold / Internals

This ties into my previous post about the Bosch fuel injectors... I received them back via FEDEX today (Sunday) and was not delighted to see the flow rates and variances between the six injectors... But I will post that information in the original post about the fuel injectors...

During my re-install of the injectors I f'd-up and popped-off two of the "O" rings and two of the "retaining discs" which fell directly into what I surmised was the cylinders...

Needless to say, foreign objects inside the cylinder doesn't make your engine happy... So, the only way I could get them out was by doing WAY much more work than I expected and remove the topside of the engine to figure out how to remove them from where they landed... THIS PHOTO ESSAY DOES NOT MAKE MUCH SENSE, BUT THE POINT WAS THAT THE INTERNALS WERE SO DIRTY, I HAD TO CLEAN THEM... I'LL PROBABLY PULL THE REST OF THE ENGINE AFTER THIS...

directly on top of the intake valves...

I was astounded to see how much CRAP had accumulated inside the intake during 20,000 miles...
BEFORE CLEANING

Those are some long A$$ runners!! WOW!

Excellent pictures... I also love the butterflies that help control the air through individual runners... very nice engineering!

Thanks for the notes about the 'crud' accumulation... I may have to tear down my SRT6 just to see what 'crud' is in there...

Well I never finished the post, but I was so overwhelmed by the CRUD that is inside this engine I tore it apart and started to clean the internals... I'm not done yet, but you can see by the photos what a difference it makes...

How many miles on that engine?

Did you ever have a good fuel system cleaning done it? Just curious...

Wow !

That's more varnish than on an antique dresser I've got in the attic !

What brand gas have you been using ?

Let me know so I can always avoid that particular brand !

Less than 20,000 miles... 10,000 were street miles, the rest have been track miles usually running Sunoco 100 race gas... I think I'll pull the tank and the fuel filter after I get the engine back together...

Damn that is a dirty manifold, I guess the PCV system is sucking in a lot of oil. If I was racing that motor I would run the PCV into the exhaust pipe instead of the manifold.

maybe you need to installed an oil catch can after the engine is back together. that should hold any oil vapors that pass the PVC valve and keep your intake clean.

Long and short! The long ones are used at lower RPMs to keep the torque up then in the higher RPMs those rectangular butterflies make the airflow switch to the shorter runners.

^ they are not for fuel economy they are for maintaining the torque curve ... the way to tune them is run on a dyno with them closed and then open... program them to close at the point the torque curves intersect.

unless cam profiles are messed with, that will end up being where the factory put it... i doubt that much money in R&D would end up getting that one wrong.

What kind of air and fuel filters you running? I've seen this on a few cars with the "lifetime" air filters that need to be oiled!
