Default Valve Stem Caps - Functional or Cosmetic?

Well, it happend!

Someone, decided they needed my valve stem caps more than I did.

I was wondering if they have any special funcition (besides keeping dirt out).

Do they have anything to do with the tire pressure detection system?

I'm thinking of taking mine off anyway. I had the same caps on a previous car, after a while, especially in the UK with the wet weather, they rust and then when you need to pump the tyres up you can't get the damn things off. Very bad idea, yes they look good, but when they rust they are a pain in the ***.

drunkiq - thanks for the links. I went there and read the entires.

In response to the question "why" - people do let air out of tires. I live in Korea, and the Koreans generally do a couple things to cars to annoy their owners. First, letting the air out of tires and second, and far worse, the key scratch down the side.

Parking space in Seoul is at a premium. If you park in someones place, whether marked or not, you will find a flat or a scratch when you return to your car. In Korea part of the After Market Service is Scratch Repair 3 times a year. My wife's Lexus Dealership performs this service free of charge - but no loaner. I left my car out one evening and upon my return found someone played a game of tick-tack-toe on my hood. $500 later and one night after the repair a repeat performance. My apartment complex found out it was one of their employees - I apparently forgot to give him a Thanksgiving Day (ChuSok) Tip

2005xfr. The valve caps have nothing to do with tire pressure monitor. Those are located in the valve stem or around the inside of the rem.

Well, I just installed a set of locking valve stem caps.

They are great looking and easy to use!

I found them on EBay for $8.95 INCLUDING SHIPPING!

Search for "spin-caps"

They are made by KLM Innovations.

They are made of billet aluminum (not chromed)

I haven't seen them on EBay since.

I did ask the seller if he intends to put any more on EBay.

I'll keep you posted

Default valve stem caps!

yes! they do have a very important fuction, other wise they would not have been manufactured. and this is to keep the road debris, out as well as keeping heat and dirt from drying out the valve stem core !!!!!!!!!!! valve stem 101!
