Default BAS/ESP Light on with C1160 fault code

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, I'm from South Yorkshire England. Just bought my 2006 Crossfire in blaze red. I use it as a second vehicle and have recently been that busy with work I just haven't had the time to drive it so it was stood on the driveway for a couple of weeks. I now have a problem with the BAs/ESP light on the dash and it won't go out... this is the story of what I've tried and messed about with so far:

Before starting the car after a couple of weeks I did do the following:

Jacked up the drivers side (UK) wheel and removed it to have a look at what I thought was a leaking washer bottle for the windscreen. Don't think I caught any wires around the brakes at the time.

I did press the anti-tow button on the centre console before I jacked it up but to be honest I'm not even sure how this button works but did press it a few times to try and figure it out - this was with the ignition off.

I then started the engine - then finding that the BAS/ESP light came on straight away on the dash before I even drove the car and it hasn't gone off since.

I tried turning the steering wheel left to right a few times etc this didn't have any effect.

I tried disconnecting the battery for over 30mins with no effect.

I did drive the car for a short while (about 10mins) the car didn't seem any different but the light stayed on.

Then I took it to my local garage:

They hooked it up on the diagnostics machine and found there was quite a few codes on there. They wiped it clean and started the car. The only code then coming up was a C1160 fault code. Saying this: C1160 - B24/15 (Rotary speed and lateral acceleration sensor): Electrical fault Rotational speed.

He told me this when I went to collect it and gave me a print out. He also said he had been in touch with our local Chrysler dealer and said that it could be one of two parts but the dealer recommends replacing both (well they would). He printed off a crappy diagram off of the internet which looks like the SRT not my standard crossfire NA. He wasn't sure where the parts were, they could be under the centre console or in the boot? He wrote down two parts - yaw rate sensor and transversal acceleration sensor.

So I came away and tried looking for these parts myself. I didn't find anything similar in the boot but did find something under the centre console just behind the gear shift. I have one silver metal box bolted down behind the gear shift (mine is manual) with a part number: A 002 542 89 18 Q05. Searching on the net and on here I reckon this is my yaw sensor? But I have also come across another part under the armrest compartment under a pull away cover. Its a black plastic box with a lead coming out of it saying MDD sensor or something like that with a part number: A193 820 34 10 on it. Again with some hard searching I reckon this is my lateral movement/acceleration sensor? But when looking I did notice this part was loose and not clipped up like it should have been.

I bought a cheap OBD2 fault reader off of ebay to see if I could read/wipe the codes myself, it reads the car but no codes are coming up for some reason.

So has anyone else had the same problem? I don't know what to replace? Most seem to have two metal boxes behind the gear shift but mine only has the one?

Any help would be massively appreciated! Thanks, Mark.

Could be the yaw sensor. In console area. But make sure the battery is good clean connections and all. Voltage can cause a lot of codes to be thrown. Don't give up on trying the reset. Doesn't always work the 1st time.

You may have rectified the problem by securing the sensor. Is the BAS light still on?

Yep, is it a combined warning light or two seperate ones as mine looks like its combined together BAS/ABS its on the right side of the gauges in that dull black small section. If I was to sort the problem would the light go out or would it need re-setting at the garage? I did check the battery voltage with a little tester I have, the car had been stood for a few days after this problem and I tested the battery cold and on a level of 1)low 2)ok but still low 3)excellent it came out as 2)ok but still low, I then started up the car for a bit, turned it off and put the headlights on for a couple of minutes which it states to do to get a proper reading, then tested it again and it showed up as 3)excellent. But I am wondering if it could be the battery as it was stood a long time and I do tend to have a problem with my cars and there batteries as its stood for quite a while sometimes. So if it was the battery and I changed it would the light go out? Also if my cheapy OBD2 reader isn't finding any fault codes could it be that there just aren't any? But how would the garage put the light out on the dash? Don't know if to take it back to the garage to put it on the diagnostics again for £45 hoping its now sorted. Buy another battery for £100 and hope this sorts it or buy a yaw sensor for £££???

Hi Mark, I’m in Somerset in the UK. I have exactly the same problem with my roadster. My journey so far has been to take it into my trusted local garage. Their diagnostic was the yaw sensor. They couldn’t clear it. Mercedes wanted nearly £500 for a new one! I got a replacement from ACD breakers in Lancashire for £80 plus VAT. They’re really good. The garage fitted it but still showing C1160 and not clearable on their diagnostic machine. I found a non Merc dealer specialist. He couldn’t clear it either. He said the replacement might be faulty. They’ve sent me yet another free of charge. I’ve tried the wheel turning both with the car standing still and with the car moving but the light is still on. I’ve been given the name of yet another dealer but don’t know what to do. So far I’ve spent about £250! The car won’t get through It’s MOT. I hope someone here has some suggestions! David 🙁
