steering wheel removable
Re: steering wheel removable
I don't know how to remove the wheel, but I do know that you must disable the air bag first. Remove the negative battery cable and wait several minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before attempting to remove the wheel. Having an air bag go off in your face while removing the wheel would be very dangerous.
Re: steering wheel removable
C_Plunkett is correct. remove neg battery cable first... etc... There are specific instructions in the Crossfire Repair Manual... If you are replacing the wheel with an aftermarket wheel, once you remove the squib for the airbag, you will have to use the DRBIII scan tool to turn the airbag warning light off on your dashboard. I can only assume this is why you are wanting to remove the steering wheel...
Re: steering wheel removable
Actually I just wanted to adjust the steering wheel one notch to the right. Right now it’s off center at the 11’clock position. The car tracks straight on an even road. It’s just annoying to drive it like that. I just wanted to make sure I don't blow myself up.

Re: steering wheel removable
its a PITA to replace the wheel... one of the first things i tried to do when i got the car was put a MOMO on. firstly you're right, you'll need a DRBIII to reset the airbag light, but it'll come back on once the system realizes there's still no airbag, but i also found out some more pieces of info...
there is a steering wheel angle sensor that is used for both braking assist (BAS) and traction control (ESP). remove the steering wheel and these features are useless. i cant remember if it affects ABS or not.
the steering wheel hub needed to convert to a MOMO is super hard to find. there is a generic Mercedes adapter (6004, IIRC) but it needs to be drilled out to fit correctly.
just FYI --

Re: steering wheel removable
i don't know off hand, but i would guess that it would. because its essentially the same car, it has all the safety features built-in, there's no adapter hub, etc... they're not cheap though. my goal was get a wheel with a smaller diameter than stock. good luck!
