I'm not an expert but I don't think that you can remove the relays one by one, inspect, and replace. I believe it is one complete unit. Since it is basically an MB part, I think that some folks have gone to a MB dealer and gotten the entire unit at a lower price than from a Chrysler dealer. Good luck.

Yes, the relays are 'open frame' types built directly on to the PCB so not really replaceable even though you can unsolder them and remove them. Have a close look at the relay contacts and check that the armatures all move freely. I am almost certain you will find that the problem will not be with the relays themselves but with the solder connections on the PCB or a hairline fracture in one of the copper tracks. What tends to happen is that the pins move relative to the PCB and the solder joint fractures around the pin. This can be very difficult to spot unless you move the relays whilst looking at the joints. I will see if I can post up a picture. In any event you might just as well run a soldering iron over all the joints to reflow them considering it only takes 10 mins or so.

could this be my problem? my xfire cranks over though. It acts as if its not sparking. I will be driving it and it just dies and wont start back up for periods of time. Sometimes just 3 minutes and other times lasting up to an hour+!

I believe that the comments about the mystery no start issue deal with the fact that the car won't crank over at all. This is certainly true in my case. All dash and warning lights come on, the fan even starts, but when you turn the key one more position you get nothing - no cranking, no clicking, nothing. So I don't know if the corrective action described on this thread would apply to your issue.

Men I love being part of this forum !

I was feeling the pain this week about the problem of no start!, my Girl friends car is a MB e320 and she had the same problem wich I solved by the crank shaft positioning sensor !.......since i saw the same reaction, that was my first thing i was going to change.........as of right now i am waiting for my car to cool down so i can drive it home tonight !

THANK YOU CROSSBOW! ....... your post made my day ! first thing tonight i will look for a place where i can order the relay ! the MB dealer around here only takes "arms and legs" as payment !.......will post update after i fix it ! thank again guys!

Generally this is a weak battery or loose / dirty battery connection issue.

hey Bant !

read this whole thread......thats how i figured out it was the fuel pump relay thing that "Crossbow39" mentiones here.....like you mine cut off while driving and nothing happened when the key was turned.

Notice how when the car is cool it starts ! with no problem......its the Fuel pump relay! change that its about 220$ at the Mercedes Benz dealer.....I changed mine it took me less than five minutes and have had no problems since!! good luck!

I had the same problem earlier this year and the dealer couldn't figure it out. I read through the various threads on this web site and decided that I would gamble and order the relay module and I'm glad I did. I haven't had a problem since replacing it. Luckily, I have a buddy that works in a garage and he got me the part at cost ($125). He actually ordered me the part from Mercedes rather than Chrysler because Chrysler wanted $200.

I don't know if the part numbers have already been posted in this thread, but here is the part number from Mercedes:

A 170 545 03 05

Please note that the part number above is on the box I received upon replacement. You'll want to be sure to verify that it's the correct number when purchasing your own. Hope this helps!

Hi all,
My no start was the relay board, I took it out myself and put it under a magnifying glass - found a crack around one of the relay pins, stuck a blob of solder on it and it has been fine since! Many thanks to all for the Help

Bought the car used with 18,000 miles on it. (2004 model). Had the problem right away. The relay overheats and shuts down the car until the electronics cool. Then it starts like nothing ever happened. This forum gave me the info to bring to the dealership to get it finally fixed (thanks!). It shows that this is a problem Chysler must know about, but is not telling the dealerships, so many people are stuck in the middle. When this happens, your stuck (highway, backroads, etcs.) Nice looking car, but this is a major issue.

Unhappy Wtf!!!!

HELP!!! So I have had the no start issue for about 3 months. It started off by just doing it every once in a while now the car will make like a jerk and cutout, and then a few miles later completely lose power. When I try to start the car it makes a noise like it really wants to start but does not. I thought it was the fuel pump relay so I went and bought a new one today. I plugged in the new one everything worked fine. I drove it for about 6-7 miles when it cutout and jerked!! So I turned around as fast as i could, and tore *** for home it died like 2 miles before my exit. I sat for about 20 minutes and it wouldnt start. So I got out and popped the new relay out looked at it for a while to see if there were any issues. Decided to put it back in, and it started right up!!! Then on the way home it cut out again but did'nt lose power so idk whats wrong with it!!! Please Help

Did you read the whole thread, I think that your relays are fine, but the board your plugging them into is what has a short in the contacts. I believe someone has gave instructions on pulling it out and is pretty easy. Look underneath and see if you see any contacts broke or cracked. It also may only happen when it heats up. The part is called the relay control module and is about $180 bucks. Let us know if this works out.

I got the whole new relay today with the circuit board, it has the Big Orange fuse. I got the whole part but when i put in the new one still had the issue. Is this the board you are reffering to? Its the same part number that was previously listed in the thread. What you guys are saying sounds like my problem but i replaced the part mentioned, and my car still dies. Where should I look to check for damage on the board?

That sounds like the same part. Underneath the circuit board is where your problem would be. Maybe remove it and just make sure all is securing tightened and everything plugged in good. There are pics, but not sure which thread. Try searching relay control module on here.
