Question Mobil 0-40

I have had little results in determining the need for 0-40 oil in the Crossfire. Is the purpose for extreme cold usage combined with high temperature usage? If the car is used in moderate weather such as 32f to 95f, can a different grade be substituted such as 20/50 which has better wear factor additives?

From what I have read it's the extra tight tolerances of the engine.
