Default Changing Camshafts

In our quest for more power it won't be long before we start seeing cam shaft changes. I found this good step by step article by Kleeman in case anyone wants to know how to do it. doesn't look hard at all.

Installing the cams is easy, finding a set is hard. Kleemann stopped selling them and won't make them anymore. RENNtech and Vath gave the same story. Schrick has been out of production with them for some time and I know they sold their last set. Custom is the best and possibly only option at this point.

Nice to see that our engines use roller chains and not belts. The job doesn't look all that difficult either. A nice weekend project!

Call them up. They drop ship from Kleemann. They will tell you it is at least 3-6 weeks before delivery. Then call Kleemann and they will tell you they no longer make them because it took nearly 3 years to sell the first batch they had made.

I just went though this last month finding cams for a customer. I'm in the process of getting some made, but it looks like I'm going to have to purchase 35 sets for a decent price. If that's the case I don't think I'll ever sell them.

Any chance of getting someone like Comp Cams to make them? Is a re-grind and option?

I talked to the engineer at Comp and he didn't seem too interested. I'm working with Schrick to have them restart production but they need a decent quantity. If we can get about 35 members to commit on both here and the MB site then they will make them. Cost is only 1400.00ish if we get 35 people.

I've looked into regrinding and the couple of companies I have talked to said there wasn't enough material on the stock cam to get any real benefit. A custom grind will run about 2500.00 a set for RD and tooling costs, so I'm hoping 35 people are interested.

I used to run Comp Cams in my drag racing days. they get about $650 for a set of cams for a SOHC 4.6 ford motor. Do they know they could get a bit more from us? The $1400ish is about the best price I have seen for Schrick cams. Do you know if they are still stocking the V8 cams?

Yeah, cams are not cheap by any means... The only person I know that has cams in his M112K is Andy one of the owners of Eurocharged. He has Schrick Cams and they sound beefy. Jake's (loungn14) is still faster without cams... and yeah it was really a shame that Schrick stopped making the M112K cams...I guess not many people were interested...mainly because it really starts to make it sound more like a racecar which most MB guys don't want to use their MB's as mainly a racecar. just my thoughts.

I think they have 2 sets of M113 left.

That 650.00 for Ford cams is times 100x as many cams as they will sell to the MB crowd. Comp is too big to "waste" resources on such a small market.

yo, guys, the sport cams from Schrick's for the m112-113 only give you 1mm=0.039" of lift last time I heard, hardly worth the effort and the money. I don't think they even changed duration from stock set up.

I think your better off making high ratio rocker arms instead..you can relocate the pin for the rollerto get a lot more lift from a redesigned arm. machine shop could easily do these by the hundreds . take a look at the basic design it's quite simple to do. relocating the pin could be done by filler welds then redrill a new location for increase ratio

That would be an awesome idea if we had an OHV set up.

It would seem the esties thing to do would be to take a 1mm or so off the back side of the lobe which would reduce the base circle. That is why I suggested a re-grind, but could the valve train take up the slop?

you basically relocate pin closer to fulcrum, then make a larger diameter roller to take up the added clearance created by moving the pin in to the fulrum.

another way is to grind the cam base circle diameter, not the lobe, then install a larger roller bearing tip in the stock rocker arm, this might be as much work.
