It is not a good idea because you are, in essence, sucking in hot air from the engine bay, essentially hurting performance. I would look into something that will allow you to channel the air from outside the engine bay, such as a needswings or alternative design CAI. If you do not want to go this route, I would keep it stock and install some high flow K&N filters in the stock air box, you will get a small gain and better breathing this way as well.....

Having the filter inside the engine bay like that is bad bad bad.
Our cars have high underhood temps, due to how little space and airflow actually occurs under hood. Putting that filter smack behind the radiator, means you're ingesting air thats atleast 170degrees in temp.

not so bueno

My baby got a better set of lungs yesterday via a new CAI. I will be listing my drop in K&N filters for the OEM box soon if you are interested in a cheap upgrade, let me know.

Ram air behind the radiator? Now I have heard everything.
Route the intakes through the firewall and tape the inlets over the AC outlets on the dash, at least it will be forced cold air.

Could have been worse, they could have ran them all the way back to their fart cans!

actually....this is done by baja and dakar racers....allowing for cleaner cabin air to be injested....and the vw gli/gti also has similar aka noise pipe

yea, but with an application like that its to keep sand and debris from fouling the filter.

Im talking like one kid had the filter sitting in the passenger side footwell. IIRC the gli/gti's pull air from the cowling between firewall and cabin.

ohhhhh....you mean they stick the whole friggin filter inside the cabin?!?!?!....duh...i thought you meant they had the stock air box/filter in engine bay and ran a flex hose from air box inlet to inside cabin...then, hook it up to a/c vent!!!!....maybe the car is so slow that the a/c is putting out more air than they get up front...! the vw set up is stupid...many are yanking the 'noise pipe' and just plugging it up like it is on their other models! ...and vw has all the stock parts to plug it up with.

yep, whole filter. I can see their logic behind it but the power gains are negated by the parasitic losses of the a/c compressor lol
