Default New CAI, How does this one look?

Hey guys, back again. I am currently under the hood with lots of things disassembled on my new xfire I just got, N/A model as you guys say, whatever that means (not applicable in my book).

So, I am presently redoing the valve cover gaskets and changing the spark plugs and wires while I am at it. I've also ordered this pesky crank shaft sensor for good measure. Now, I just noticed that the airbox has a plastic piece that is snapped off on it and when I got back there it wasn't fully connected to the engine.... uh oh... that's not good! So, obviously if that thing goes back on there, it's going to be made sure to be fastened really well, but I'd like to get an improved air intake system for a little extra hp and looks of course. I really like the needswings dual cai, but I can't justify dropping the money for that right now with all the other things I need to do to get this car in good condition.

So, that having been said, I was looking on ebay and found this sucker. Please let me know what you think about this. Also, I expect that no other forum members would do anything stupid like trying to bid against me, that would just cost us both more money!

CHRYSLER CROSSFIRE AIR INTAKE SYSTEM - eBay (item 320629936444 end time Dec-14-10 19:30:58 PST)

Thanks again, loving this forum!

This type thing is constantly coming up. The stock system is a "cold" air intake, pulling cool air into the filters from in front of the car. What you are looking at is a "hot" air intake pulling hot air from the engine compartment.

It is unlikely that HP or torque will increase. It may make more noise and if you like the look go for it. But, be aware that a HAI like this is not going to help performance.

Don't waste your money. That's a Hot Air Intake and is worse than the OEM.

it does look clean and yes the HAI intake is what you would be getting BUT if you are handy you might be able to modify so that the filters sat behind the grill with some extra pipping clamps and silicone couplers and viola! there are some really good threads about building your own intake.

I could make that for about $30.. 2 spectre air filters, a couple feet of aluminum piping and hose clamps.

for less than that auction price you can get a set of needswings "devil horns" and some tubing and have a better cold air setup

You could buy one of those $20 chips that promises an extra 50 hp and greater gas mileage. They do not work but at least you will have spent $145 less and your car will not lose any power etc. That's got to be seen as a positive thing.

Save your money and get something that works.

Agreed with all above.

By the way : NA = Naturally Aspirated...so, no forced induction.

Don't do it. You'll be wasting $165.

You're better off putting K&N filters in the stock air boxes. That would cost less and provide better airflow.

But to really do it right, buy a NeedWings cold air intake. They run about $450, but you'll get a lot better air flow.

Thanks for all the input guys, yea, I saw it and it looked pretty nice, and I kept thinking... but the snorkels on my current xfire go all the way to the grille, how can this be better being inside the engine, aside from the better filters and looks...

I guess I will hold out. BTW, is there anything special about the airbox, or is it just a box that connects the air intake lines?

Does anyone have any links to threads where people have built their own?

LOL been a little while since you got yours, Tom?

I think they want about $800 for a new dual setup

The stock system and the Needswings CAI pulls air from in front of the radiator = cool air. The system you were looking at pulled the air from the engine compartment = hot air. That's the difference. The Needswings has larger intake tubing than the stock system, less baffles plus its teflon coated, better air flow.

Ditto to what everyone has said. I have a a single tube, Needswings style cold air setup which has the filter in front of the radiator. If I had to do it again I'd go for the SL55 setup and here is why. I live in So. California so it doesn't rain much but it can really pour when it does. I worry about all that rain getting sucked into the engine and ending up with hydro lock. I wouldn't worry about the SL55 setup. It costs a whole lot more than $168.00 and takes a little work to adapt it but it flows well and it flows cold and the big air boxes look pretty nice.

The only way you would hydrolock the engine is driving through standing water, a couple drops of water aren't going to hurt. If I'm not mistaken, you would need close to or equal to the volume of the combustion chamber at TDC. K&N filters dont let in as much water as you would think.. Its actually tough to get it through (test it out next time you clean the filter). I would imagine the sl55 setup would be prone to the same risk of hydrolock as the needswings.

Thanks DS, I kind of suspected that but it still makes me nervous and I just told our friend I'd sell him my 3" polished aluminum CAI. I don't think however, that the SL55 would be quite as vulnerable and I probably wouldn't have to pull the thing off when going to the Chrysler dealer since the mechanics have never seen a Crossfire LOL
